Santa Delivers A PERSONAL Christmas Wish!!

I know Christmas is over…but we still have another Christmas story that we want to share with you for today’s ALGN post.  It wasn’t from this Christmas, but it is a great Christmas story, nonetheless.  It was on the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley and it was one of the segments from “On the Road” with Steve Hartman.  Near Raleigh, North Carolina, Santa came to an elementary school class and brought a Christmas present to every single child in the class.  As it turned out, each child got exactly what they had asked for Christmas….every child, that is, except for one.  One young girl (Bethany Arnold) had only one Christmas wish and it was that her father would come home from Iraq.  He had been working as a contractor in Iraq and she had only seen him for two weeks in the last two full years.  The last time they saw each other, he gave her a necklace with a heart and he kept one as well.  They each held each other’s “heart” and he said that the next time that he saw her, he was going to give her her heart back.  Bethany refused to ask Santa for a single present for Christmas, because all she wanted was for her Dad to come home.  So, Santa had her get up on his lap and tell him what she really wanted for Christmas.  She did and then Santa gave her a necklace.  It was the one with her heart on it.  She looked confused…until he took off his beard and hat and she realized that she was sitting on her Daddy’s lap!!  This is a great Christmas Story!!  I know that you may think it is over, but I like to have the Spirit of Christmas all year long………..so, one more time……MERRY CHRISMAS — and a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

Do Teachers Make A Difference? YES!!!

Teachers are HEROES!!  Too often, they don’t get the recognition and thanks that they deserve.  Today’s ALGN post is just one example of many of what kind of a difference a good teacher can make in the life of his or her students.  It is a great way to start out the week. My father was in education all of his career.  When he was Superintendent of Schools, he always had a sign in his office that said, “What is best for the children?”.  He would refer people (administrators, teachers and others) back to that sign when they had decisions to make.  The best teachers live their lives this way. The miraculous job they do could never be compensated appropriately.  But, we can at least thank them and let them know just how much they are appreciated.  Watch today’s post and see for yourself what can happen when a teacher, using his patience, caring and creativity helps a student overcome a severe challenge that he faces.  It is a very moving video!!  It also touches a little bit on the importance of not bullying (we have heard much in the news lately about the devastating effects that bullying is having in schools across our country).  Today’s post will help teach us what can be done when the right people do the right things.

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

Dog Gets Hit By Car – Saves Owner’s Life

It is time for our ALGN Pet Post of the Week.  This is an AMAZING story of what a dog went through in order to save the life of her owner.  A pet dog (Husky / Beagle mix) named Lucy was on a regular walk with her owner (John Miles) in Massachusetts.  .  This walk was a regular occurrence.  In fact, they even go on the same route.  This time, however, during their walk, both Lucy and John were hit by a car and seriously injured.  It was just after this accident that the really amazing act occurred.  John blacked out (and really doesn’t remember anything after getting her leash to start the walk).  Lucy, however,  knew she had to save her owner.  She knew where the closest place was where she could find people.  She ran to a dental office and barked and barked until someone opened the door.   She then limped back to John (who was still lying in the road) and stayed beside him, refusing to leave his side, until paramedics arrived to save him.  John doesn’t have any memory of the event, but he says that he was told by others that Lucy just stayed by him and whined (and literally cried) because he wouldn’t get up.  She wanted to save him, but she had done all that she could do.  Now, she just worried.  Supposedly, beagles actually have tear ducts and people say that they actually saw her cry.    It is a good thing she got the paramedics to come save them, because they (John & Lucy) were both so badly injured.  From the injury, John has two broken legs, a broken arm, and more than a dozen fractures in her face.  Lucy has a torn ACL and some leg fractures.  John’s daughter said that Lucy has been moping around the house and crying as she wishes her owner, John, would come back.  John was scheduled for surgery first, but they both will require lots of surgery.  Yet, through it all, not only is John in shock that his dog would go through so much to save him, it is quite a miracle that it all worked out so well.  John says that, when they are both heeled up, they will both be going for some great walks again.  Yep…Pets can be AMAZING!!! Sometimes, they save our lives, figuratively.  Other times, they may just be the one to save us, PHYSICALLY, as well!!

Wish Delivered Two Years After Wife Passes Away

Brenda Schmitz passed away from ovarian cancer two years ago.  But, before the Iowan passed away, she wrote down a dying wish for her family and gave it to a friend to have it shared with her husband after he found someone else to marry.  Her husband, David, says that before Brenda passed away, she told him that she really wished he would find someone else and get remarried so he could be happy and have her help in raising their family.  Two years later, David had finally found someone, complying with his deceased wife’s wish.  She had told him that the way he would know that it is the right person is that she (Brenda) would be there.  Well, what he DIDN’T know was that his wife had written down her wish and given it to a friend to have it shared with David when he finally had found the special someone.  Brenda’s friend decided to have the wish shared with David at a radio station, where a DJ read her letter on air.  David was blown away, as he felt his wife was really “there”, blessing his decision to move on and get remarried.  In the letter, she also tells David that part of her wish is that he will give his new bride a weekend of complete pampering!!  This is a really touching story!!  I hope it reminds us to share our love with our spouses and families NOW while we still can!!  NOW is the time to let them all know of our love!!  They need to hear it and know it, by our words AND our actions!!

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

Christmas Shoes Music Video

For Christmas Eve, I decided to have our ALGN post for today be an “oldie, but goodie”.  I’m one of those people who gets choked up by songs with a good message.  So, even though it isn’t “news”, today’s post is “Christmas Shoes” by Newsong.  Most of you already know the song.  I know I sure do.  But, no matter how many times I listen to it, I can’t help but get touched by the message and have my “eyes leak” just a little bit.  As this will be the last post before Christmas Morning, I want to wish each one of you the VERY MERRIEST CHRISTMAS EVER!!  I hope you have a wonderful day and that you are able to spend it with those who mean the most to you.  Thank you for watching our posts at A Little Good News.  I hope that some of them have brightened your days.  And, thank you for sending some good leads into us and for sharing our posts with your friends and family and telling them about ALGN.  May we each take the time to think about the TRUE meaning of Christmas this year and let that TRUE spirit of Christmas sink deep into our hearts.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Little Girl Writes Apology Letter To Store

Sometimes, giving an apology can be hard.  Even when you know you are the person in the wrong, it can be difficult.  However, it is also a liberating feeling.  After watching this video that was sent in to us by Aubrey D., I want to give a big HUG to the parents of this little girl, for teaching her a very important lesson about the importance of a sincere apology.  I’ll bet that this young girl is going to grow up much more committed to apologizing when she should (instead of either trying to hide what she did wrong….or not even care).  She will live much more sensitized to things that could offend, etc.  She will also grow up with much more integrity.  What great parents.  You will see in the video (if you haven’t seen it already) that this 5 year old girl sent a letter to a department store in Cambridge, United Kingdom.  She wrote in the letter that she had broken something when she was there that cost two pounds.  She even attached sufficient money to pay for what she broke.  Someone at the store took a picture of it and put it up on the internet.  They asked people for help in finding out who this little girl was (all they had was her first name).  The mother of the girl identified her as the girl who wrote the apology letter.  The video says that they were able to thank the girl.  I wish they had done even more.  Both this little girl AND her parents impress me.  It gives me hope for our future when I see parents raising their kids to be people of character like this little girl.  Merry Christmas!!

Secret Santa Save Man’s Life…and Soul

The last Friday before Christmas is usually “Secret Santa” day at a lot of businesses and schools.  So, we decided to have a Secret Santa video post for our last Friday before Christmas.  A bit thank you to Shirleen K. for sending this our way.  This video is another from CBS’ “On the Road with Steve Hartman” segments.  Every year, for the last few years (at Christmas-time), Steve says that he goes out “Secret Santa” (an anonymous wealthy businessman) as he travels the country and randomly goes up to people, handing them $100 bills.  Every year, Steve says that this Secret Santa hands out around $100,000 of his own money.  The responses are always great, but even Steve wondered if it was really worth it, since you don’t really know if they are deserving and what they will do with the money that Secret Santa gives them.  And, this year, Secret Santa appeared to have really selected someone who didn’t deserve it as he was giving out money in Reading, Pennsylvania.  He found a 30 year old man named Thomas Coates.  He is addicted to heroine and, by his own account, he hadn’t worked for over a year because he has spent so much time in and out of treatment facilities.  He admitted that he had recently even hawked his son’s toys so he could feed his habit.  The night before he met Secret Santa, Thomas had a big fight with his girlfriend.  She begged him (a self-proclaimed atheist) to tray “shooting up a prayer to God”.  He did…the next day, Secret Santa was handing him a few different $100 bills and telling him that he was special.  At the end of the video, Secret Santa says that if Thomas turns his life around and stays clean and saves his marriage and family, “wouldn’t it be worth it?”  Now THIS man is MORE than a Secret Santa.  He REALLY has the Spirit of Christmas!!

Christmas Jammies Music Video

I know that today’s ALGN post is not news, but since it is Christmas-time, I hope you will give me a little leeway.  It IS fun and if you haven’t seen it yet, you should.  You will get a kick out of it.  I decided to post it because I had a few friends send it my way (maybe it is because of my music video making past — who knows).  Thanks to Denise S., Frank L. and I can’t remember how many others who sent it to me.  This Christmas video is really blowing up on the internet (going viral in a very big and fast way).  Before any of you complain that it isn’t really a Christmas music video, but it is actually just a creative plug for the business that the Mom and Dad have, save yourself the time.  I know that, but when it is done this well, I get past it, because it works!!  They did such a great job with it that they deserve to have the publicity that they are going to get.  This husband and wife (Penn and Kim Holderness) decided that, instead of a typical Christmas newsletter that they would send out, updating everyone about the family, they would make a Christmas music video and update everyone that way.  They wrote a song “Christmas Jammies”.  It is sung to the tune of “Miami” (a 1997 Will Smith song).  While they still brag about their “amazing” kids (I think that is a requirement for all Christmas newsletters), it is done in such a fun way, that even the bragging is accepted with a smile.  I hope you enjoy it.  And, like the Holderness’ would say, “Have a Merry Christmas (whether you have new “Christmas Jammies” or not)!!”

Survival Story That You Won’t Believe

Even after watching this video, you may still not believe this survival story could have really happened.  WOW.  I know that this is two days in a row that Diane Sawyer has a news piece we use on A Little Good News, but these are great stories.  We hope that you like them as much as we do.  We weren’t sure what to make of this survival story when we watched it.  Could someone really survive like that for that long?  What must have been going through his mind.  And, I know that there are challenges you have to be careful of to survive even when using an oxygen tank at certain depths.  Yet, somehow, Harrison O’Keene (the cook on a tug that sunk to the ocean floor) survived.  He had been in the bathroom onboard the tug just before 5 am when a massive rogue swell capsized the ship.  As the ship sank, Harrison scrambled into a cabin and found an air pocket (just a few feet of precious air).  The video says that he survived on just six sodas in the total darkness in the cabin of his ship on the ocean floor just off the coast of Nigeria for 60 hours.  The search and rescue team was not even looking for any survivors. They were there, looking for bodies.  They had already brought back four bodies of the 12 men who had been on board, when one rescuer saw his hand and reached for it and was totally shocked to have his hand grab him!!  60 hours after capsizing, Harrison was rescued.  He had survived what surely must have seemed an unsurvivable situation.  After being rescued, he said that he was looking forward to returning to being a cook in a hotel (FAR from the terrors that he had survived).  What an amazing story.  And what a MIRACLE that he lived through it all.

Soccer Prodigy Records His Best Comeback

Today’s ALGN post is about soccer…and yet, it is not about soccer.  Diane Sawyer’s “America Strong” used a great piece from ESPN about one of the top child soccer players in the U.S.  This young boy’s name is Chris Hegardt.  He was still 7 years old when it was discovered that he had 6 or 7 tumors in his liver.  The doctors were very concerned about the cancer that appeared to already be spreading quickly.  His dad told him that it was a great thing that soccer taught him to be such a tough competitor, because he was in for the toughest competition of his life.  He had major surgeries, including a liver transplant when he was nine that most assuredly saved his life.  But, through it all, even during chemo, amidst total hair loss and at his weakest point, he refused to give up his soccer.  Soccer was the one thing that kept him going.  So, his Mom would even get him out of school early so he could rest and be ready for practice.  Many times, he was too weak to finish soccer practice, but it didn’t matter.  He was out there with his team, doing what he loved most.  This story has a happy ending, too.  Not too long after his recovery, he was back on the field and led his team to the state soccer title, where he was named the MVP.    WOW!!  What an amazing young man.  His passion not only carried him through a very difficult time, but it helped give him the strength he needed to keep fighting during so many tough and lonely days.  May each of us find and constantly nurture our passion…and may it be something that leads us to do good along the way.

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!
