College Student Turns Trash into Food

What a great story!!  Ben Simon was a college student, eating food at the school cafeteria one night, when he noticed that a lot of the food, at the end of the day, was getting thrown away.  Not only were he and his friends surprised to see it going to the trash, but even more amazing was how MUCH food was going to waste.  It was a LOT OF FOOD.  They asked the cafeteria folks if they could donate that food, instead of letting it go into the trash. The cafeteria leaders said, “Absolutely”".  Immediately, his next thought was, “Wow….what if this is happening in every college / university cafeteria in the nation!!”  It just didn’t make any sense to him that we could be throwing out so much perfectly good food, when there were so many other people who are starving.  He refused to let that continue.  And that was how it all started.  Since then, Ben and his partners started the Food Recovery Network.  In just a couple of years since starting his organization, they have already served over 190,000 meals across the U.S. What an amazing person (and his partners).  I’m sure that there have been a lot of people who had that same thought about the extra food.  But, they ACTED on it…….and kept acting, making it not just a great win for the local people who were down on their luck and in a bad way….but, also across the nation (and it continues to grow), as food is being taken to hungry people everywhere.  He is already at over 40 campuses and growing all the time.  I call this young man a HERO.  He is saving lives…….and he is doing it with what was going to be considered “trash”" by the people in the cafeteria food service team.  I LOVE people like this!!  We need more of them.

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

Real Life “Bambi on Ice” Rescue

Who wants to see another animal rescue?  Usually when we see the “rescue” videos, it is of a dog or some other pet that someone left to die.  But, today’s ALGN post (our “Animal Post of the Week) is about a different kind of rescue.  Today, we are going to show you video of a real life “Bambi on Ice” rescue (thanks to Danielle C., who told us about this one)!!  A father and his son (I believe their names, if I got it right, are Doug and Chance Kennison).  Doug is the father.  He and his son live in Minnesota.  There is another video (not the one you will see — as I was not able to get it to work for our post — but it gave more / better information about the rescue, so I will use that as I explain it to you.  It appears that someone had told the father and son that they had seen some kind of animals that appeared to be stuck on the frozen over lake not too far from where they live in Minnesota. The Kennisons took their hovercraft over to check it out and found three deer, who had apparently walked out onto the frozen lake and kept falling down. The more they struggled to get up, the more they would fall down, taking them farther and farther out onto the frozen lake.  By the time the Kennisons got there, they were quite a ways from shore.  But, they were also exhausted and no longer even trying to get up.  The father and son felt like (based on the lack of energy of the deer) and the feedback they got from the people who told them about spotting them, that these animals could have been there for two or three days (this video says two days) before the father and son rescue team arrived.  They tied rope around their legs and used their hovercraft to pull them back to shore.  I don’t like the way that this video ends the rescue.  It leaves you wondering if the deer ever actually got up and lived.  But, in the other video I watched, the Kennisons say that the deer did eventually get up and walk off to freedom.  This rescue by these two men literally saved the lives of these three animals.  Again, I don’t think the video gives their work its proper due.  But, I am very impressed that they would do what they did to save them.  I hope you enjoy this quick video of saving lives.

A Widow Waves to Students and Then…

Are you ready to start your day out with a smile?  Thanks to Davi F. (who sent this to me), I sure am smiling a little brighter!!  Today’s ALGN post is about an elderly widow who waves to students as they head to and from school.  Her name is Tinney Davidson.  She and her husband began a tradition of giving a wave to students as they headed to school when they moved to the area a few years back.  Her husband passed away a couple of years ago, but Tinney decided to continue to wave to students.  She sits by her living room window and, if students look in as they are walking by, she will wave to them and give them her big smile.  The students at Highland Secondary School say that, when it first started, it seemed a little strange, but now it is something that they look forward to.  Some say that her small act has really made a difference for them.  Even if they were feeling down, they knew that, as they walked by that old lady’s home, she was going to wave and smile at them, lifting their spirits.  And, we hear that she doesn’t just do this BEFORE school, but she can often be seen during lunch and after school, waving to her student friends.  Well, this story took a pretty cool turn this past Valentine’s Day. Tinney was invited to come to the school (although she did not know why).  She was in for a great surprise, because she was the “Honoree” at a special Valentine’s Day Assembly.  The students gave her lots of valentine’s cards, a special wave from them all and even a video of students giving her a wave and making comments about what her waves have meant to them.  Watch the video and see for yourself what a difference she has made in the lives of these kids with her small act of service……and what a difference the students and school made in her life by being thoughtful enough to honor her!!  VERY COOL!!!  I love it and I hope you do, too!!

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

Dying 5 Year Old Is Princess For A Day

Today’s ALGN post (“Princess for a Day”) is one of those stories that makes you feel great and hurts you at the same time.  Thank you to Winklett for sending it to us. What would you do if you knew that you only had a few months left to live?  Okay…now here is an even tougher question:  What would you do if you found out that your little five year old girl had only a few months left to live.  That was the situation that the parents of little Claire Lankford found themselves in.  But our video post doesn’t tell the whole story.  To get the “rest of the story”, I had to read about it.  The article that I found gave more information than the person on the video gives us.  According to the article, little Claire Lankford is a five year old girl from Texas who LOVES princesses.  Actually, she is obsessed with princesses.  At the age of three, Claire was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer.  Doctors know of no cure for this rare disease.  They have told Claire’s parents that their sweet little princess has only a few months left to live.   So, her parents decided that they needed to make her feel special and let her know that she is loved.  Mom and Dad got dressed up as King and Queen and Claire was dressed up as a Princess. Dad then carried his beautiful little princess through a throng of cheerleaders and into a horse drawn carriage that then paraded the little princess and her parents down a few streets where the community was cheering and bringing flowers up to the carriage for the Princess.  It was a WONDERFUL affair where, if even for a moment, Claire was able to forget about all of her pain.  She truly was “Princess for a Day” and she loved every minute of it.  Her parents said that they wanted to make sure that she know how special she was and that she was truly loved….by many people!!  What a touching story!!   What a great set of parents…and what a wonderful community to come out and help make this day be an even bigger success.  But, most of all, what a WONDERFUL little princess!!  I am sure that her Heavenly King will welcome her with open arms!!

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

This Principal Used to be the Janitor

Happy Monday Morning, everyone.  I think you will love today’s ALGN post.  Thank you, Colette D., for sending in this great story.  It is about a principal at an elementary school in Louisiana.  There are a few things that make him different than other principals.  The first thing that is pointed out in the video post is his incredible smile that never stops.  He says he just can’t keep from smiling.  A smile always just wants to break out.  And that is how he has always been.  He is new to the principal position, but he has been working at the same school for more than 30 years.  This man’s name is Gabe Sonnier.  His first position at the school was much different than the first job most principals have.  Instead of starting his road to becoming principal in a teacher position, Gabe Sonnier began as a janitor.   He tells us that, way back in 1985, the man who was principal at the time came up to his always happy janitor (Gabe) and told him that he would rather see him grading papers than picking them up!!  This message from the principal sunk deep into Gabe.  Gabe said that nobody ever had believed in him that much.  He felt as though, if his principal felt he could do it, than he could do it.  So, when he wasn’t cleaning classrooms, he began studying in them.  And, even though it took a long time, he kept at it.  He eventually got his degree. After that, he kept at it and got his Master’s Degree.  He says that his story (of going from janitor to principal in the same school) has a message for EVERYONE.  He says that NOBODY should ever allow their current position to define them.  They can always be more if they are willing to work for it.  He points out that it doesn’t matter where you start, but where you finish!!  What an inspiring story.  I can’t help but believe that his students have an extra bit of help with an inspiring and positive man such as Gabe as their principal.  Another couple of lessons that weren’t explicitly shared in the video, but I think are important to point out are:  1)  He had someone who believed in him — which gave him the ability to believe in himself that much.  Sometimes, you can be the difference in someone’s life just by letting them know that you believe in them!  Be that person for someone.  2)  His always positive, smiling attitude was PROBABLY what made him stand out to the principal.  It was more than likely that happiness that made the principal see more in Gabe than the average principal would see in their average janitor.  So, make sure that you always stay positive and happy. That will oftentimes help create the opportunities that you are praying for!!

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

Strangers Help Boy in the Cold

Nobody likes to be “left out in the cold”.  That is one reason why today’s ALGN post is so touching.  It can warm even the coldest heart.  Thank you to Mindy C. and Danielle C. who sent this to us.  It was done by an organization in Norway trying to raise awareness and funds for SOS Children’s Villages.  They are trying to help children in Syria who are cold, freezing and starving.  So, they set up hidden cameras and microphones and then set a young boy on a bus stop bench on a bitter cold winter day.  The poor boy didn’t have to act at all to have people notice that he was cold.   The organization wanted to see how people would respond when the person who alone and cold is someone that they did not know.  What they found out was that most people are genuinely good, caring people who want to help those in need (the cold, hungry, etc.).  That is what happened again and again with the boy they had sit in the freezing cold on the bench.  People really cared.  With each warm piece of clothing going around this cold boy, my heart just got a little warmer, too!!  Yes, I know that the situation was contrived….but the responses from the people were all real.  And, in case you are wondering, not everyone helped out.  In fact, in one case, they have made it so you can’t see the face of one person.  She must have chosen not to help.  Then, after they film each situation, the organization has to identify themselves to each person they filmed and get their permission to use their likeness.  I’m guessing that, after not helping, that woman did NOT want her likeness on film!!  But, what made me feel great was that this situation was in the great minority.  The vast majority of the people filmed went out of their way to help the young cold boy.  I LOVE stuff like this that proves there is still a whole lot of good in the world.  In countries all across the globe!!

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

Jane Goodall’s Moment with Freed Chimpanzee

Today is our Animal post of the week.  And, this time, it is NOT a dog video.  Today, our video is about a chimpanzee getting released into the wild.  You animal lovers will really enjoy this one (if you haven’t already seen it).   Thank you to Denise S. and Pierre C. for sending this in to us.  This video follows Jane Goodall (Recognized universally as the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees) as she and others take a chimpanzee named Wounda (meaning “about to die”) and release her in onto Tchindzoulou Island .  Wounda is the 15th chimpanzee that they have released to this island, which Dr. Goodall refers to as a chimpanzee’s paradise.  The caring physician that oversaw bringing Wounda back to health is Dr. Rebeca Atencia.  Dr. Atencia points out that when they first got the chimpanzee, she was very close to death.  She had severe malnutrition.  But, they worked with her and she was now ready to go to “chimpanzee paradise”.  But, the best part of the whole video is what happens AFTER they lift the cage to free the chimpanzee.  Watch what Wounda does before she leaves for her freedom.  It is a touching moment.  Yep, no matter who or what it is (an adult, a baby, a dog, a chimpanzee….or anything else), we all appreciate being treated well.  That should help us to always want to help more.  But, the other point to think about is this:  Do we always take the time to show our appreciation to the one who helped us (and to God)?  Today’s lesson on gratitude is brought to us by a chimpanzee named Wounda!!

Garbage Man Gives Surprise to Autistic Boy

Garbage!!  Today’s ALGN post will give you a much happier feeling about garbage.  But, first of all, I want to apologize for missing the last two days.  I am trying to figure out what to do with A Little Good News.  This truly is a labor of love for me.  It lifts me to be able to show EVERY SINGLE DAY that there are great things happening all around us.  However, I will be leaving for São Paulo, Brazil in a few months with my wife and youngest daughter.  We will be there for three years.  I have been asked to preside over a mission (full of young men and young women from my church).  As I do that, I will be leaving everything else behind and putting my full-time focus on that.  As I work to prepare for this mission, I am at a crossroads with this site I have enjoyed posting to each day.  So, I’m not quite yet sure what I will be doing with the site.  As I work to prepare for this mission, I have a ton to do, so between now and when we leave, I don’t know if I will be stopping ALGN altogether, or doing it less frequently — or passing the baton to someone else for a few years.  I LOVE it and want to see it continue.  So, hopefully between now and the next week or so, I will figure it out.  But, sorry for letting it slip for a couple of days.  Now….back to our story.  Some of you may have seen this already.  I have had four people send me different links to different stories about it.  But, it is heartwarming.  A little autistic boy in Ojai, California is obsessed with the garbage truck that comes by each week.  Every week, he looks forward to that day.  In another video (not this one), they show how he takes all of the stuffed animals in the house and sets them up in the window each week so they can all see the garbage truck in action.  He even had a toy garbage truck, but it broke.  Well, the family, as a result, has gotten to know the garbage man a little bit (since their boy is out watching him every week).  This week, as the mom videos her boy watching him (as she often does), Manuel (the garbage man) asked if he could give the boy a present.  He didn’t know the boy was autistic.  All he knew was that the boy loved to watch him every week.  So, this week, he decided to bring him a present (out of his own money).  The surprise gift is a toy garbage truck.  It is so great to see people doing good things for others. That kind of service is what gives me constant hope for our future!!!

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

“Valentine Bomber” Makes People’s Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!!  And, when I say this, I want to make absolutely sure that those who currently don’t have a boyfriend or girlfriend don’t feel left out.  That is why I like today’s ALGN video so much.  It is perfect for Valentine’s Day.  This young boy’s name is Jacobo.  He lives in the Philippines.   This video was shot during last year’s Valentine season.  What I love the most about this video is that he is not trying to be anybody’s boyfriend or to get someone to like him (heck, he may even be too young to really even want to like a girl, I don’t know).  However, he DOES want to make people happy.  Watch him as he “Valentine Bombs” a number of unsuspecting individuals and see how much it brightens their day.  This Valentine’s Day, if you have someone you are with, make sure you let them know how much you love and care for them.  However, if you are NOT in a relationship, you can STILL make today a very special Valentine’s Day by “Spreading the Love” and making sure that people around you feel LOVED.  THIS is BEST kind of love. It is Charity, or the pure love of Christ.  Let this kind of love shine through you to others who could use a nice LIFT on this Valentine’s Day (and every day)!!  As you do, you will quickly find out that you are feeling more love in your heart than you could ever imagine on this Valentine’s Day!!  So, with that, let me say it again, HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!  I HOPE IT TURNS OUT TO BE YOUR BEST ONE YET!!!

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

Virtue Makes You Beautiful Music Video

I know today’s ALGN post is not really “news”, but it is going around the internet.  Some of you may have already seen this, but I liked it and it is a message that everyone would do well to listen to.  Thank you to Phyllis C. for pushing me to share this one.  Today’s ALGN video post is a music video about having virtue and integrity.  The song is titled “Virtue Makes You Beautiful” (sung to the tune of “That’s What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction.  It has a bunch of young men (probably 14 – 18 years old or so), who had previously recorded this song, lip-synching to it on a football field, while they are all dressed up shirts and ties and suits singing that VIRTUE and INTEGRITY are what make a girl beautiful.  This is a different message than the world, at large, give us.  But, it is a WONDERFUL message.  This video also has a professional singer performing with the young mean (Alex Boyé), but he goes out of his way to just let it be the boys’ show.  He adds a lot to it, however, with this background talking and his hamming it up (which probably helped the young men to do their parts with a little more flair, as well).  Alex also closes it out at the end of the song.  Just very well done.  I especially like the message about virtue and integrity.  Also, I’m a fan of well done music videos (by non-professionals), ESPECIALLY when the message is great.  So, if you are a young woman (or young man, for that matter), watch “Virtue Makes You Beautiful”and pay attention to the message.  For you older folks (like me), be sure to share this music video with your kids!!

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!
