Waiter Feeds the Homeless

Good Monday Morning!!  I hope you are excited for this new week ahead.  We decided to start this week out right with a nice little video of someone serving some homeless people in his area.  As I understand it, this young man does prank videos.  But, this time, he decided that what he wanted to do was to dress up as a fancy waiter and surprise a bunch of different homeless individuals by serving them a very nice meal.  Thank you to Aubrey D. for sending this link to me.  It is neat to see the service that this young man provides these homeless people and the way they are treated with such dignity (very different from how they are normally treated).  Many times, homeless people are avoided by the general public.  Or, sometimes, mean people do terrible things to them, thinking it is funny.  But, in this case, the homeless in this video are treated with dignity and respect (and that is above and beyond the nice meal that they also get).  This brought a smile to my face to begin the week and I hope it does for you, as well.  Watching these homeless individuals be fed and treated with such respect reminds me of the scripture in the Bible, found in Matthew 25:40 that reads:  ”And the King shall answer and say unto them them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”  May we always look to treat all those around us (homeless or not) with the same dignity and respect that we would want to be treated.  Let’s keep working to make this world a better place!!

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

Teenagers Show Power of Positive Words

Words always have meaning.  Sometimes it can even be unintended, but they carry meaning, nonetheless.  Today’s ALGN post is a great example of the power of words.  It was sent to me by a former next door neighbor, Patricia M.  I want to thank her for sending it to me.  I REALLY liked it.  Many of you know that I am “Mormon” (a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints).  This video happens to be from an activity that was done by some youth who are also members of this same faith.  But, those of you who have followed my posts know that I have used videos from other churches, too.  When the message is good, I share it.  And, many times, some of the greatest good news messages (even separate from the “good news” of the gospel) come from churches.  So, what about words?  Well, words can lift people up….but words can tear people down, as well.  This video is about a bunch of teenage boys who were asked to write ONE positive thing about each of the 36 young women in their group (without the young women knowing what was going on).  Then, the young women were brought back in to the room, one by one.  They were asked to hold up a blank white posterboard and the young men each brought up their “word” that they had written for that one girl.  After they were done, the girls were told that they could turn the posterboard around and read the words that were written by the young men.  WOW!!  How do you think those young women felt when they did that?  How do you think they felt that night as they went to bed.  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this activity and wish it was required for all of us to do.  EVERYONE needs to hear more positive words about who they are.  So, like this video says, if it was 100% successful with these young women, what do you think positive words could mean to others as we share them with those we come in contact with on a daily basis?  Let’s try to do this, personally.  And, if we get a chance to teach others about this concept (or even share the idea of this activity with others), let’s do it.  Let’s make sure that OUR words are positive ones!!

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

Policeman Gives Ticket and $100

Nobody likes getting pulled over by the police.  Tickets are no fun.  Don’t get me wrong.  Policemen are great people.  They help keep us safe and do much to make our lives better.  Nevertheless, when you are driving in traffic and those lights come on behind you, your heart skips a beat and your palms start to sweat, etc.  Today’s post is about someone who got pulled over and got a ticket, but ended up being THRILLED that it happened.  Thank you to my Bill B. for sending this in to us.  A man in Plano, Texas got pulled over by a policeman for having expired tags.  When the police officer who was writing the ticket asked him why they were expired, the man told the truth.  He said that they were really struggling and it was either pay for the new tags or feed their kids.  He wasn’t surprised that the police officer continued to write the ticket.  He didn’t expect to get out of the ticket because of their tough financial situation. So, when the officer finished filling it out and handed the ticket to him, he just took it and figured he would have to figure out how to get it paid.  But, then something strange happened.  As he opened up the ticket, he noticed that the officer had enclosed a $100 bill, too.  The man couldn’t believe it.  What is even more interesting is that the police officer didn’t tell anyone what he had done.  But, the man who got pulled over told his family and his grandfather wrote a letter to the department about this officer.  The officer isn’t on the video (because he really doesn’t want to be recognized).  He told a fellow officer that he just had decided that the man who got pulled over just needed it more than him so he felt that he needed to do it.  What a great man.  He still did what he needed to do as a police officer, by giving the ticket, but then he went above and beyond to make someone’s day after that.  Yes, there are heroes all around us……but some insist on remaining in disguise.  They are not doing these things because they want recognition, but because it is the right thing to do.  Speaking of tickets, they must be punching their tickets to heaven!!

Little Lacey and the Sweet Sixteen

Little Lacey Holsworth is about to make you become a fan of the NCAA Tournament.  Whether you are a fan of college basketball or not, I dare you to watch today’s video and not end up being a fan of Lacey and her special friend, Adreian Payne.  Today’s video is slightly longer than our average videos, but if you don’t watch it, you will really miss out.  This video was sent to me by my friend, Tim M.  And it “got me”!!  I’m pretty sure that it will get you, too.  You see, today’s video is about a little girl with cancer (Lacey Holsworth) and a very good basketball player (one of the best players on Michigan State’s Sweet Sixteen team) by the name of Adreian Payne.  Lacey was stricken with cancer and was in the hospital.  One time, when Coach Tom Izzo took his team to the hospital to visit the sick children there, Lacey asked Adreian to stick around for a little while…and this big-time college basketball star STAYED!!  And, ever since then, he has been glad that he did.  That was a couple of years ago.  Since then, they have become very good friends.  In fact, Lacey considers Adreian to be her big brother.  Coach Izzo tells the story of how Lacey took a bad turn for the worse earlier this year.  Adreian wanted to go visit her, so Coach Izzo went with him.  When Lacey’s mom told Lacey that Adreian was there, she turned and opened her eyes for the first time in a couple of days. She looked up and smiled at her big friend with the big heart.  Lacey’s mom says that Adreian can make Lacey smile when nobody else can.  Watch this video.  It will touch you at least three different times as you watch this special video!!  Guess who was Adreian’s special guest when he was introduced on Senior Night this year at Michigan State.  That’s right!!  He took (along with his Dad) his special friend, Lacey Holsworth!!  Without telling you who it is, I will tell you that I already had a team that I was going to root for in the Sweet Sixteen.  But, after watching today’s video, I can’t picture myself rooting against Michigan State.  How cool would it be to see Lacey out there, helping Adreian cut down the nets!!  GO, LACEY, GO!!

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

Firefighters Get Creative to Save Little Girl

Firefighters are some of our greatest heroes. They do some things that most of us would never dream of doing.  Firefighters are the people who are running IN to places that everyone else is running OUT of.  Today’s post was sent to us by Tami C.  We want to thank her…and so many others of you who keep sending us great ideas for future posts.  They are GREAT.  PLEASE keep them coming!!  Today’s post is about firefighters and another rescue that they performed.  But, this one is a little bit different than the “regular” firefighter rescue story.  These firefighters saved a little girl (or at least calmed her down enough so that she could be saved) by SINGING to her. When the firefighters in Reading, Massachusetts got to an elevator where a mother and her 4 year old daughter (Kaelyn Kerr) and little baby son were all trapped inside, they found that little Kaelyn was very scared and emotional.  One of the firefighters talked to her.  In his attempts to calm her down, he found out that she loved the movie Frozen.  So, he and his fellow firefighters began signing “Let It Go” from the movie to her and it calmed her down enough for them to be able to help her and her mother and baby brother get out to safety.  What a sweet story of creative work on the part of these heroes.

Viral Music Video Celebrates Family Addition

Okay….I am aware that some of you may not think that today’s post qualifies as “news” and you may have me on that one.  But, I still love it and decided to have it be the post for today.  It is about family and I LOVE things that celebrate the importance of the family.  Today’s post is about a time-lapse music video that has gone SUPER-viral in just a few short days.  Some of you may have already seen this video over the weekend.  But, that is what I get for only doing these posts Monday through Friday.  Tom Fletcher is a singer/songwriter who wrote a song and recorded it.  He filmed himself, playing the guitar and singing the song while in the other half of the video, he filmed a time-lapse video of his wife, Giovanna, standing in the same place every day for the 9 months of her pregnancy, wearing the same outfit, and showing her “bump” grow day by day.  This was their way of celebrating this wonderful addition to their family.  It is very creative and will be a fun thing for their family to watch for years to come.  But, at the same time, it went viral in an instant.  I won’t tell you how the video ends.  You may have already guessed, but it is a nice ending.  The song is called “Something New” and it is my understanding that Tom wrote it just for this very important event for their family.  Is this news?  Well, to the Fletcher family, this is the best news of their lives!!  Their little baby (Buzz Michelangelo Fletcher — yep, you got that name right) joined their family on March 13th and they decided to share their family’s joy with the world with this very well done time-lapse music video.  Congratulations to the Fletchers.  Now, let’s all go let our families know how much they mean to us!!

See What This Dog Does to Some Kittens

Today is Friday and we haven’t had a “Pet Post of the Week” yet.  So, that is what today is!  Thank you to Karen D. for sending this to us.  It is about a dog named Lily.  Lily was a dog that was abandoned by its owner (possibly when they found out she was pregnant).  She is a lab mixed with some other dog breed(s).  She was taken into the Humane Society Adoption Center.  After giving birth to her 6 puppies, they were all adopted, leaving the mother dog all alone.  But, then something interesting happened.  A number of baby kittens all showed up at the Adoption Center, without their mother.  The people at the Adoption Center knew that it would be . a real challenge to feed the kittens by hand.  So, they decided to try something else, instead. They put the kittens in with the dog (Lily) and carefully see what would happen Lily INSTANTLY took the kittens and fed them for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  We don’t typically think that something like this could ever happen.  Aren’t dogs and cats almost “Natural Enemies”?  So, did the “mothering” instinct override the “dog” instinct?  I guess we may never know, for sure, what happens in cases like this.  In fact, in the video, it gives some quick examples of other animals (besides dogs), where the “mothering” instinct took over to help in a time of need between different types of animals.  I guess when it comes down to it, a mother is a mother.  They seem to always have a very soft spot in their heart for babies. This is one area where people aren’t so different from dogs or other animals.  Aren’t mothers wonderful?!?!  They are the greatest of all of God’s creations!!  Thank you to a special dog named Lily.  But, more importantly, thank you to Moms everywhere.  Now, let’s all go hug our respective Moms…or, if you are too far away, give her a call and say THANK YOU and let her know we love and appreciate all she has done for us.

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

To Moms of Children with Down Syndrome

Good Morning.  For those of you who are unaware, tomorrow (March 21st, 2014), is World Down Syndrome Day.  Rather than have today’s post be our post for tomorrow, we decided to post it today so that people can be aware of this day BEFORE it starts.  This is a wonderful short video that allows people with Down Syndrome to respond to the question of a pregnant mother who just found out that her unborn child has Down Syndrome.  It is very touching to hear them say (in many different languages) what she should expect from her child as she moves forward and has her baby.  Thank you to Pam D. for letting me know about this video.  I hope that, as you watch it, you will think about not only the people you know with Down Syndrome, but the parents of children who have Down Syndrome.  Tomorrow, on World Down Syndrome Day, wouldn’t it be great for each of us to reach out to those friends and relatives and let them know that we love them.  Wouldn’t it be great for them to hear words of love and encouragement from you tomorrow?  It has been my experience (at least with those people with Down Syndrome that I have known) that people with Down Syndrome are some of the most loving people on the face of the earth!!  In fact, I have heard that many have given them the nickname of “Angels in Disguise”.  After being around them, I very easily see why this nickname fits.  HAPPY DOWN SYNDROME DAY tomorrow, everyone.  Please make it a GREAT day for your appropriate friends and relatives!!  You’ll be glad that you did!!  And for you parents of children with Down Syndrome, please know that God only gives special children to very special parents like you!!  Thanks for the great “above and beyond” work you do to raise these beautiful children so well!!

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

Parenting — It’s About Time!

Good Morning!!  This time, today’s ALGN is going to be a little bit different.  I hope you all will like it.  It is actually a TV Commercial that I believe was created a some time back.  However, I have ALWAYS loved the message.  I think it is a timeless message that we all would do well to hear on a frequent basis.  Before I introduce the video, in the spirit of full disclosure, the video is actually a TV commercial that was put together by the LDS (Mormon) Church.  I am a Mormon and I LOVE my church (and I love to share it with my friends).  But, that is NOT what today’s ALGN is about.  The commercial doesn’t talk about the Church at all.  Rather, it is a timely message for all parents about what the most important thing they can spend on their kids.  The answer is “TIME”".  I will warn you that, if you haven’t seen this commercial yet (it is just under one minute long), it may “get you”.  In fact, even though I have seen it numerous times, every time I see it again, it still gets me each time.  The message in this commercial is simple, yet profound.  Watch as a very busy father quickly rationalizes and justifies why he can’t spend time with his son.  But, most importantly, watch as he learns about how to be a better father (even though his son is the one who delivers the message).  I hope none of our subscribers are offended by me putting this as my ALGN post today.  While I’m always happy to share with anyone who is interested about the joy that my Church brings me and how it has helped me live my life, raise my family and strengthen my marriage, etc., that is not what I am trying to at ALGN.  Rather, I thought this wonderful message, helping us each to think about how we choose to spend our time was one that people may appreciate.

Right Person, Place, Time Saves Baby in Flight

I love stories where someone was in the right place at the right time and they had to courage to act when they were called upon.  It is neat to see what happens when those things come together.  In the case of today’s ALGN video post, the person who was being “helped” was a litte 15 month old baby nicknamed “Little Gary”.  The baby had completely stopped breathing and depending on which mid-air witness you talked to, the baby’s face was either blue or purple.   But, this baby was saved because Garrett Goodwin (a former army medic and a current CPR teacher) was in the right place at the right time and he quickly acted on what he knew.  He also got some other help, in particular from one other person with medical training.  We watched a few different videos of this wonderful story.  In one of the other videos, Garrett talks about how after the baby started breathing again, he did not want to let go of his lifesaver (Garrett).  It is neat to hear how the passengers were actually teary-eyed when the baby’s life was saved.  When the baby started to cry, some people actually seemed worried, so Garrett said in his booming voice, “A crying baby is a LIVING baby!!”‘ and people applauded.  Thank goodness for our “every day heroes” like Garrett who jumped in to use his skills when they were called upon in order to give life back to the baby known as “Little Gary”.
