Noah is college bound

As everyone is going back to school I thought I would show this short video.  This video is about a young man who gets accepted to college.  This young man is not like the average student heading off to college.  Here is a little back story about Noah.  Noah Van Vooren has Downs Syndrome.  He attended a high school in Little Chute, Wisconsin.  He was the waterboy on the football team.  They even let him carry the football on the last game of the year for a touchdown.  He has always just wanted to be one of the team.  His parents said (in a different video about his life) that the doctors said he may never walk or talk or read.  Now as he gets a letter from the college he applied to and you can be there to see the pure joy he has for being accepted.  Accepted for being who he is and what he can bring to the college.  Congrats to you Noah.  We at ALittleGoodNews.com wish you the best as you begin this new chapter in your life.   Thanks to Dan C. and  Sean R for bringing us this video.

Veterans stand against protesters

This story is from some time ago when in Gerard, Kansas they are gathering to lay to rest Corporal Richard Bennett.  It should be a day of peace and sadness but so often we hear of this happening over and over again.  Radical protesters who show up to disrupt funerals of our fallen soldiers. Trying to spread their hateful message.   Bikers by the hundered converge on the military funeral as invited guests.  This is a group of Christian veterans who won’t allow this to happen anymore.  With their bikes and their bodies they form a shield.  These vets (the Patriot Guard) show up at military funerals to stand between these protesters and the family of the fallen soldier with flags waving, reaving motors and music playing so the family can grieve in peace without seeing or hearing these protesters.  The men feel that no family should have to face this type of hatred on the day when they are burying their loved one.  They say that even if the protesters stop showing up that he and fellow Patriot Guard members will continue to come to stand together as a show of support.  We all need to be there to help when we can and how we can.  Great job Patriot Guard.

Dog saves man’s life from bear attack

Hiking in the woods  can be a peaceful time spent with family or even alone.  This story is about a man and his dog going on a nice walk in the forest.  Steven Krichbaum and his dog, Henry, were hiking through George Washington Forest in West Virgina recently.  He sees two bear cubs running up a slope.  Next he sees the mama bear run towards him.  The bear was biting his legs when his dog came running up to help him.  Henry, the dog began attacking the bear giving Steven time to grab a rock so he could get her to stop biting him.  It worked and the bear turned and walked away. Now they had to walk 3/4 mile back to their car.  After receaching the car they drove to the nearest stop (a fruit stand) where owner Eddie Richard and his wife called 911 to get help.  Both the dog an Steven were injured in the attack but will both be fine.  The reporters state that the most common bear attack is when a mama bear has cubs in the area.   Great Job Henry for being there for your owner.

Message to Teachers and Students

As all our kids head back to school it is time for a video about school.   This is a message to teachers and students.  This video is from Kid President.  He has many videos on the internet and his presentation is fun but informative.  He really tries to get his point across with fun, laughter and great lines.  You have to listen closely not to miss any of his great ideas.  He reminds students as well as teachers how important learning is.  He talks about history and how we need to learn history so we don’t repeat it.  Wise words from a young man.  He reminds students they have to show up, can’t be late and pay attention.  Read books to learn.  He says everybody is a teacher and everybody is a student.  We can all be learning and we can also teaching others as we continue to learn.  He is so cute and inspiring.  So in his words, “Get your learn on”.  Great job Kid President.  We look forward to your next great video.  Thanks to Patricia M for sharing this video with us.

Building Homes for the Brave

This is a story about a group from Habitat for Humanity.  This is a group of folks that builds or rebuilds homes for those that cannot afford a home on their own.  The ownesr of these home are required to assist with the building and will pay back a 0% interest loan.  The building is done mostly by volunteers.  It is a very rewarding program to be involved with.  What makes this story different is this group in San Diego is building their first ever “Building for the Brave” .  This project will create homes that will be for disabled veterans.  San Diego is a military town so they want to take care of our military. What a wonderful program this is for the needy but especially for our veterans who gave up everything to serve our country.    The homes are also being  furnished with state of the art furnishing adapted for the special needs of the veterans. It is really nice to see how much this means to the resident that will take ownership once the project is complete.

Mailman saves child from choking

South Carolina mailman is being hailed a hero after he saves baby from choking.   Eli Cooper about to turn one and like a typical one year old he puts everything in his mouth.  Stephie Cooper, Eli’s mom turned around to find him choking on a plastic wrapper.  She tried to help him by beating him on the back but it wasn’t coming out.  She ran outside to get help and found Chris Brown the mailman.  Brown didn’t say a word but just grabbed the child and did the Heimlich on him.  The plastic wrapper came flying out.  Brown said he learned this during a training years ago.  He is definately their hero.  He is too humble to accept the title of hero.  Brown said, “I really don’t feel that way because to e I would have done it for anyone or I hope someone would have done it for my children”.   Whether he thinks so or not this man is our hero.  Thank you Chris Brown for being there for Eli so he can celebrate his first birthday.

Needy woman gets a surprise at her door

It was a rainy day in Monroe Connecticut back in April.  When Penny Pompa woke up on April 30th this year she was shocked to find the Publisher’s Clearing House prize patrol at her door.  This is one of those things that everyone wishes would happen but only happens to a few.  This time the woman that won really needed this surprise.  As Penny tells the people who delivered her big check she had spent the morning praying for help.  It appears that Penny had been diagnosed with Lyme disease and with mounting medical bills and other bills she was just about to lose her home.  What perfect timing for her to receive this gift to help her out of this financial mess.  She could only say “This is amazing”.  We are so happy for her that she could win this prize at this time when she needed it so much.  Congratulations Penny.

A gentle man who saved people from suicide

This is a story about a man who lived in Australia in an area called “The Gap”.  Donald Ritchie who lived here for almost five decades watches the cliffs daily.  He has always loved the sea from his days in the Navy as a young man.  Now (when this video was filmed) at 84 he watches the cliffs for a different reason.  Donald goes over whenever he sees a person over there.  This spot is famous for suicides.  Officially Donald has saved more than 150 people from taking their lives (unofficially they say it may be closer to 400).  He goes over with a smile and some kind words.  He even brings them back to his house for his wife to prepare a tea or a meal and share it with them.  He is a kind man who loves to listen.  His kind words and invitations have made an enormous difference in saving lives.  He was not trained in suicide prevention. Officials say it is his kind manner that works so well.  This video was made to congratulate him and name him a hero by a local bank.  Un update to this story tells us that Donald passed away peacefully at age 85 about two years ago.  I am sure he is being rewarded for all his good deeds!  God Bless you Donald Ritchie.  You are a true hero. Thank you Patricia M for bringing us this inspiring story.

Amazing runner with MS

Kayla Montgomery is an amazing athlete in itself.  But when you hear what she overcoming you will be shocked.  Kayla is a runner for her high school track team.  Running track is something Kayla has been doing for sometime.  That was until she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).   She has gone form being one of the slower runners on her high school team to one of the fastest distance runners in the nation.  Three years ago when Kayla was diagnosed she said, “Instead of letting it stop me from running, I’ve used it to motivate me to break records”.  And break records she does.  She is doing so good that she trains with the boys team and receives no special treatment.  That is except when the  race is over.  You see, MS keeps her from feeling the pain in her legs.  When she stops running her legs gives out and she collapes.  As she crosses the finish line, her coach catches her to keep her from falling.  ”It kind of feels like I’m just kind of floating”, she says.  ”There’s nothing underneath me”.  Kayla’s coach, Patrick Cromwell is amazed at her progress.  ”I don’t know.  I would have never thought she would improve 8 minutes in four years either”.  No one knows what will happen as the disease progresses.  We only know that Kayla is amazing and we wish her the best.   Thanks to Shawn H for bringing us this story to share.

Witness delivers baby at traffic accident

California woman Iria Wolnick was heading to pay her last respects to her mother, who had passed away a few days before, when she witnessed a rollover accident. When she rushed up to the woman hurt she discovered that the woman was pregnant and had received a large wound during the accident.  Her baby was coming out of the laceration.  No one in the car was wearing a seatbelt.  The mother was citically injured.  Iria waited for an ambulance.  The mother did not survive but the miracle baby was ok.  Born at 6lbs 11 ounces she was born a month early.  Iria says “it doesn’t feel like she lost her mom but gained something too”.  To be able to bring this little miracle baby into the world was certainly a miracle.  The other child (their two year old daughter was alive but did recieve burns.   Considering how bad the crash was it is amazing that the children and the father survived.  Thanks to the quick action of the passersby these little ones were given a chance at life.  Thank you to Iria for stopping at this accident and helping out.   Thank you to Jody J for bringing us this story.
