Love Letters in a Record

This is a report from a news station in Denver.  It was reported right around Valentine’s Day but I think any day is a good day for a love story.

An old record from a thrift shop held an unexpected piece of history: a love letter from 1945, sent from a World War II soldier to his girlfriend in Kansas. ”We brought the album home and we were looking through it, and I said, ‘There’s a letter in here!’” said Ilene Ortiz, who bought the record. “I thought, ‘This is such a romantic letter and someone should have it.’ I’ve had it for about six months, and I didn’t know what to do with it.”

Ortiz wanted to find the owner before Valentine’s Day, and contacted 7NEWS for help. Turns out the couple, Bill and Bernadean Moore, got married and moved to Colorado to raise three children. Their daughter, Melinda Gale, said her mother saved all the letters Bill sent her while he was in Europe serving in Patton’s Third Army, but somehow they got lost after her mother died in 2010 and her dad, now 90, went to live at a veteran’s assisted care facility.

“We can’t find their letters which are a very special collection she had for years,” Gale said. “Years and years. And we can’t find them. So this is the only original that we have.”

Gale got tears in her eyes reading her 20-year-old father’s words.”My darling, lovable, alluring, Bernadean,” she read. “I ran out of space, but I could have written a lot more adjectives describing you. You are so lovely, darling, that I often wonder how it is possible that you are mine. I’m really the luckiest guy in the world, you know. And you are the reason, Bernadean. Even your name sounds lovely to me.”  What a wonderful gift this lady gave to Gale.  I am sure she will never forget it.

Couple finds old love letters

Lloyd Michael and Marian Michael had saved their love letters for over 40 years.  They were stolen when their storage unit was broken into.  They thought that they would never see these again.  They were in an old steamer trunk.  They thought that they would never see them again.  One day a stamp collector who had recevied the box decided to search for the couple whose names were on the letters.  He found them and was able to return the letters to Lloyd and Marian.  How pleased they were to get their letters back.  What a wonderful thing for the this man who came about these letters honestly diid to make these two wonderful people happy.  You never know how your acts can affect another.  The thief thought he was getting something of value but the value was on in the hands of the two owners.  This was a value that could never be replaced.

Homeless man gets reward

This story is from some time ago but it is worth revisiting.  This is a story of  Glen James, a homeless manwho lives in Boston.  Glen finds a bag with $40,000 and a passport.  When he finds the money (even though he has none himself) he turns it in to the police.  The city of Boston was overwhelmed with his honesty.   They even honored him with a plaque.  Over 500 miles away in Midlowthian, Virginia Ethan Whittington sees this story.  He was taken with this story and thought that Glen deserved more than just a plaqye.  Ethan started a campaign and people donated over $160,000 (this amount is updated to what he has raised currently).  How wonderful the community is to recognize the honesty of this man.  How many of us would do what he did and turn in this money.  No one saw it  but him. No one knew he had it but he never thought of anything but to get this money back to the owner,  How amazing.  Here’s to Glen and all the people who thought to honor him by donating to his reward.

Happy Birthday to Him

Here is a wonderful little video showing how a little kindness can mean so much.  A group of men in Chicago were walking the streets delivering backpacks with sports drinks, socks, toiletries and other supplies to homeless people. A bunch of grown men, while doing this for these who needed it couldn’t stop the tears from flowing when they met Albert. It happened to be his birthday, and they were there just in time to answer his prayers. This was a beautiful experience for all of them.  It being Albert’s birthday he was surprised and was so thankful for everything they gave him and he could not be happier (even though what he was getting was not much).

Special thanks to CopyPress for throwing the Unconference in Chicago, where attendance was free as long as attendees donated a backpack for charity event the next day. This generous gesture, along with the generosity of all who attended, created some magical moments, and helped dozens of homeless people in downtown Chicago!  This is a great idea that would be so easy for other groups to do.  Get together a group of people and if everyone just brings one bag the cost is not much for each participant but what you will get in return.  Giving to others you get back so much more than you give.

Disney Surprises Shoppers

What an adorable thing to happen at the mall.  What if you were walking through the mall and saw a shadow that seemed to follow your every move.  This is a delightful video created by Disney.  We all know the characters and these folks get caught up in the moment never giving much thought to how it was happening until the doors open and out comes “you know who”.  You have to watch this and see the pure joy in the eyes of those who stumbled across this “show”.  You wonder how many jsut passed by and didn’t notice what was going on.  Even the most serious businessman takes a moment to notice that “he was getting shadowed by Goofy”.  Even when Mickey out dances a pretty good break dancer… it is pure joy.  Thanks to Disney for always bringing joy wherever they go.

Woman donates kidney and gets much more

Danny Robinson was in desperate need for a kidney.  He had been on dialysis for two years 3 days a week for 4 hours a day .  He wanted a normal life.  Danny and his mom went on a radio show talking about needing a kidney.  His mom said she was not well to donate her kidney.  Ashley McIntyre was a stranger who heard the report and knew that she was the same blood type.  She thought that she was healthy and could give him a kidney if they were a match.  So before she would let him  know she made sure she was a match.  They met after she found out that she was a match.  They spent time together before the surgery and kept in touch after. She just wanted to make sure he was ok.  As time went by they grew closer and closer.  At Christmas Danny gave her a ring and asked her to marry him.  She said yes and now Danny got so much more than a gift from a stranger.  He got a new life with the woman of his dreams.  They are planning their wedding and also the birth of their child in June.  Congratualations to Danny And Ashley. We wish you happiness and health.

Simple Acts of Kindness

Can’t we all just use a little small act of kindness?  Something as simple as a smile or a “good day” up to  money in the parking meter of someone you don’t know. I love this video.  These guys just stopped by a fire department to drop off some soda and a pizza. What could you do?  What would mean something to you?  How can you show that you care?  Try it today.  Spend some time thinking of all the ways you could “treat” someone to a little joy.  Enlist the help from others to make your efforts go that much further.  What would happen in this crazy world if everyone just once did something nice for someone else.  Sometimes we quickly jump to the opposite situation when someone does something that makes us mad or upset.  What if we could as quickly jump in and do something nice for the guy behind us in line?  Bringing joy to others gives you a great feeling. So do like these guys and go try it one day.  Let us know how it went.  Share the joy.  Share the love of life.

FREE Groceries

What a great way to treat people.  This is a great video put on by some company that helped this man and his kids to provide free groceries to a few deserving families. It is wonderful to watch the families once the find out that they are getting free groceries.  We don’t know their stories.  We don’t know why they need the free groceries.  We don’t need to know.  You just have to look at the joy on their faces to know that they appreciate the gift they receive.  Sometimes it is just about giving. Not giving because they deserve it or even need it.  Just giving to give.  It is a gift to you as much as the one you give to. Thanks to everyone who gives to others without expecting anything in return.  During this video you see the man who arranged the gift never speak up or even let anyone know that he is involved.  Giving without calling attention to him or his kids.  What a fun thing to do.  AND what a great lesson for his kids. Good job.

A different way to look at dolls

This story today is about dolls.  No just about what you can do with dolls but also about the way that they make us see ourselves.  She takes the ones that others have disgarded and “makes under”  these fashion dolls be plain and simple .  People have just been taken with their  beauty of the simplicity .  She is hoping that the doll makers will take a suggestion that these dolls are the kinds that the children will really like to play with.  Even the kids say that they look more like them and that they like them more than the “over make-up” faces on the dolls before they were changed.  Her mother helps create new clothes.  Once shared on Facebooks the story was shared over 100,00 times.  The little girls love to imagine what these dolls would do if they were little girls.  The people think they look so much happier now.  She doesn’t want to manufacture them – she just hopes that she will influence the toy manufacturers to make the kind of dolls that little girls really want to play with.  What do you think?  What can we learn from this story?

Through the eyes of a fireman

Did you ever wonder what it is like to be a fireman?  Did you ever wonder what it is like to run into a burning building, to fight your way through the smoke?  This is a short video of from the helmet cam of a Fresno firefighter as he makes his way to a buring apartment.  I was amazed at how little they can see through the smoke. I was amazed at how calm and determined they can be.  We all have seen the TV shows and movies and you think that Hollywood can portray the scene realistically.  This short video shows you the courage and determination they have every day as they do their job saving and helping others.  I am in awe at their bravery.  They never know what they will face and on this day they rescued several children from the burning apartment.  These are true heroes.  Everyday they put their own lives on the line for others.  Thank you to all of you out there who are public servants.  You are our heroes.  You are amazing and we can’t say it often enough.  Thank You.
