89 year old Bridesmaid

What a great choice for a bridesmaid!!  When Pennsylvania bride Christine Quinn tied the knot in May she asked one of her best friends, “Nana Betty,” to be part of her big day. Quinn told BuzzFeed Life that choosing Nana Betty as a bridesmaid was an easy decision.
“Who doesn’t want her best friend standing beside her on her wedding day? Not to mention all of my friends love my Nana as well, so we all had a great time planning and spending time together,” she told BuzzFeed Life.  Nana Betty wasn’t immediately convinced her granddaughter actually wanted her in the wedding.
“She asked me about 10 times, ‘Are you sure?’ and ‘Why would you want an old lady in your bridal party?’” Quinn told the Huffington Post.  From the wedding photos taken by Sweetwater Photography, it is clear that Nana Betty fit right in with the bridal party.  “Spending the entire day with Nana by my side as I married the love of my life was all I could ask of her,” Quinn told BuzzFeed Life.   Nana Betty even joined the bridal party on the party bus.  What a great day for everyone.  Family is the most important part of a wedding.

She finished her bucket list.

Shirley is 94.  She lives at a retirement home and seems to be the social director.  She loves to run the entertainment there at the retirement center.  From Bingo to Concentration all together with prizes.  She even got to meet her game show heroes Pat and Vanna. She said they were very nice. She keeps very active including even painting that she used to do in her younger days.  She still spends time with her family.  She had 3 children and has plenty of grandchildren.  She had been married for 57 years.  She still has one thing on her bucket list.  She wanted to buy 5 seconds of commercial time to create an ad for TV.  Yes, a commercial with just 3 words.  Love One Another.  She just wants to get that message out.  Now her bucket list is complete now that this report was shown on TV.  You are amazing Shirley.  I hope people listen to your message and take it to heart.  That is one message that can’t be said too many times.  Thank you for sharing your life with us.

A Powerful Send-Off

Goosebumps ahead… PNBHS Students pay tribute to their fallen rugby coach and teacher Dawson Tamatea. Thousands of high school students in New Zealand performed a traditional haka dance as a send-off for a beloved teacher who died. Video shows at least 1,700 students from Palmerston North Boys’ High School on the country’s North Island performing the dance at the funeral service of Dawson Tamatea, who died on July 20. He was a physical education and mathematics teacher at the school for almost 30 years, a spokeswoman told ABC News. What a send off for this beloved teacher.  ”We are extremely proud of our boys’ performance and we know that Mr. Tamatea would be, too,” the school wrote on its website. Haka is an ancestral war dance performed by the Maori people of New Zealand. The rugby team “All Blacks” are famous for performing the dance before their games. ”This complex dance is an expression of the passion, vigour and identity of the race,” according to a description on the All Blacks’s website, and “a custom of high social importance in the welcoming and entertainment of visitors.” According to the school, Tamatea was also involved in my extra curricular activities and sports, including tennis, basketball, and softball teams at the school.Mr. Tamatea’s passing will be difficult for many young men with whom he has had a close association as either a teacher, coach, manager or camp leader, as well as for many of our teachers who have known him for a long period of time. How wonderful to see the respect these young men had for their teacher.  RIP Mr. Tamatea.

What are your memories?

This is another one of those thought provoking commercials that we need to see.  Nature Valley used this time to ask 3 generations what memories they have of their childhood.  It is amazing to see the difference in each generation.  Nature has always been a part of growing up   If we do not take the time to show these young people they will miss the beauty of nature.  Whether nature is just going for a walk or growing something in the garden.  You must share and teach the next generation before it is forgotten. This is just a good reminder of what we all took for granted in our childhood.  Share with the young people in your lives.  Don’t be afraid to challenge them to do some of the things you did growing up.  They will appreciate it and will love you more for sharing it.  What are your memories?  Have you taught a young person something you learned when you were young.  Memories made together last longer.

His Voice Touches Their Heart

Caring for people comes in many ways.  He thought he was there to be a nurse.  To take what he learned at school to make them comfortable.  One day while thinking to himself Jared Axen preparing for his day he began to sing.  It began softly to himself and then he noticed people started to notice his voice.  He discovered that he had a gift beyond just taking care of the physical needs. He was able to care for them with his song. Norma Laskoske is a patient there.  She loves to hear his song.  She can see that he is singing to her, directly to her and for her.  This is the best medicine some of these patients can get.  They are there to be made comfortable and to forget about the pain they are going through.  Song is the best medicine but also the love he shows to them.  Jared says it would be easy to just turn on the tv and walk away but it means so much to them for him to spend time with them talking, singing, telling jokes.  He finds that this attention helps them have less pain and an easier time during this difficult time in their life.  Thank you to Jared for this gift you are sharing with these people.  You truly are an angel on earth.

Deaf Mom Hears Son’s Voice for the First Time

Dawn lost her hearing about 15 years ago.  She had hearing loss that was so severe that hearing aids were never an option. Being deaf, it is so hard for her to follow a conversation because she reads lips.  When more than one person is talking it is almost impossible for her to follow the conversation.  She has 3 children with her youngest being 8 years old. She has never heard her son’s voice.  This video goes with her through the surgery that gives her a cochlear implant allowing her to hear again. What makes this video so special is when she hears her son for the first time. I think he wanted her to hear him even more than she wanted to hear him.  He is cute.  He is so excited for her to hear him.  He couldn’t wait to tell her he loves her.  What a special time for the two of them.  Family makes this so special. It is a whole new world for this family. We are so happy for you.

He Will Care for Her Forever

What is love?   This video is all about love.  The love between a man and woman. Not just the physical attraction of two people loving each other when it is easy but to love each other when it is not.  He is dedicated to her through this horrible disease.  Alheimer’s can take her away mentally but it can’t change how he thinks and cares for her.  He spends every waking moment doing everything for her and he does not feel that it is a burden. No he says it is a privilege.  What a wonderful man.  This year they will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.  He will be there by her side even if she is not quite the person he married.  He takes his vows seriously. In sickness and in health.  He will care for her as long as he needs to.  He remembers how they used to love to ride bikes when they were young.  So he created a chair bike that would allow him to take her out and give her a ride.  What a joyous sight to watch them enjoy the time outside.  He is determined to care for her every need for as long as it takes.  She is his princess and he is her William. He said he would not have it any other way.  What a wonderful man.  Happy Anniversary you two.

Cancer Patient Weds from Hospital Bed

With a little help from friendly hospital staff, a terminally ill man was able to have the “best day” of his life and marry his girlfriend in his hospital room. Keith Borum and Nina Scott were married recently at the Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, New York. Nina Scott, now Borum, said even in the unusual setting she found the wedding perfect. ”The whole thing was great. I don’t know what my favorite moment was,” said Nina Borum. “I couldn’t imagine how great it could be or would be. The staff just outdid themselves … We couldn’t have done it no better.”  Nurses and other medical staff at the hospital helped make the wedding more special by finding people to donate flowers, cake and rings. The couple who have been together for three years were surrounded by friends and family all wearing protective blue medical gowns over their clothes to protect Keith Borum against infection.  Borum has been battling non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma for about 18 months, according to ABC station WABC. Earlier this year he ended up in the ER due to pain in his abdomen that turned out to be a cancerous mass. ”He’s been really going through so much and he can’t walk,” said Nina Borum. “It’s hard on him. He’s really hard…It’s just sunk his spirit.” But on his wedding day Keith Borum was able to lighten the mood by stealing his new wife’s sunglasses. Sitting in his hospital bed Keith Borum told WABC that in spite of his terminal diagnosis he was enjoying “the best day of my life.”

Fire Rescue By Neighbors

Emergencies happen everyday.  We watcht them on the news often.  Firefighters are amazing to run into burning buildings and save people. Often they don’t think of themselves but only work hard to rescue anyone who is still in the fire.  Recently in Sandy Springs, Georgia there was a fire in an apartment complex.  The fire department was called and arrived quickly.  While they were checking out the fire two girls who were trapped in the fire came to 2nd story window. The two girls were trapped in their burning apartment when neighbors urged them to jump from a broken window. Watch as the two girls fall into their neighbors arms from a second story window. These neighbors risked their lives helping others.  How great was it that they were there to help.  I am sure those two girls think so.  The firefighters said they think it is human nature to help others.  I would like to think so.  I think it also takes a special spirit inside people to step up when they are needed. Thank you to these two men that they were there on this day.  You are amazing.
