Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Good Morning.  Today’s ALGN post is a short one about Martin Luther King, Jr.  Since today is Martin Luther King Day, we decided it was appropriate for us to honor Martin Luther King with our post.  There were a number of different options on the internet, but we decided that, rather than just play his speech again, to post a video that gives people a little bit more background on Martin Luther King.  He truly was a courageous man, who sacrificed a lot in order that there could be equality of all men and women.  He ended up giving his life for this important cause, dying as a martyr, by an assassin’s bullet, for the cause of freedom everywhere.  Although Martin Luther King worked tirelessly for the cause of freedom and equality, he believed strongly that these efforts should be done in a peaceful manner and many times reminded his crowds and followers of the need to protest in peace.  I have read many wonderful quotes from Martin Luther King.  Besides the words that are most often quoted from his “I Have A Dream” speech (which have some incredible quotes, but most are very familiar with them), here are some others:

  • “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
  • “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence of that by the good people.”
  • “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
  • “Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake.  Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.”
  • “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.  Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
  • “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.”
  • “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
  • “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
  • “To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.”
  • And on the night before he died, he said, “I just want to do God’s will.  And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain.  And I’ve looked over, and I’ve seen the Promised Land.”

Thank you, Dr. Martin Luther King, for standing up for such a just cause, for fighting the good fight, even when it was not popular, simply because you knew it was the right thing to do.  In spite of death threats, you carried on.  As violence raised its ugly head on both sides of the issue, you preached peace and love and led by example.  May each of us take from some of the wise counsel given by Martin Luther King and work to treat others better each day.  There are still many people who are treated in an unjust manner.  Not only some because of race, but the homeless, those targeted by bullies, those with mental or physical challenges.  Let us follow the example of Dr. Martin Luther King and stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves!!

“Paying It Forward” Waitress Gets Paid Back!!

“Pay It Forward” is one of my all-time favorite movies (although I still HATE the ending).  I love how there are still so many people who “pay it forward”.  They do good deeds NOT because they want something in return. They just want to help someone out — and, many times, they hope that their good deed will inspire the people that they have helped (by “paying it forward”) to go help someone else, as well — and those people will keep “paying it forward”.  Today’s ALGN post is about someone who decided to “Pay it Forward”, but then got PAID BACK.  It is a pretty great story.  Sarah Hoidahl is a single mother of a 15 month old in New Hampshire.  She is a waitress, working hard to make ends meet.  Recently, two women in the National Guard came to her restaurant. She overheard them talking, as they looked over the menu, about how they were not going to get their pay because of the government shutdown.  Sarah decided that it just wasn’t right that people who were giving of themselves for our country should go without pay. She ended up paying for their meal and left a note for them, thanking them for their service.  The two women went back and told others.  The New Hampshire National Guard ended up posting a photo of her and her note on their website.  Ellen’s team found out about it and invited her on their show where she was surprised with quite a “thank you” from Ellen.  I won’t tell you what happened on the show.  I think it would be more fun for you to watch it for yourself.  Thank you to Aubrey D. for telling us about this neat story!!

This Wedding Had Been Waited For Long Enough!

Weddings are always very special occasions, no matter where they occur.  Today’s ALGN post is about a sailor and his bride (Dylan and Madison) that felt they had waited long enough.  This couple were high school sweethearts that had planned to have their wedding quite a while back, but instead, his stay was extended and they had to  put off their plans for their wedding.  When Dylan found out that he was going to be given a 6 day leave, he asked his fiance what she would be wearing at the airport to greet him.  Her father joked that she should wear her wedding dress and things just started rolling from there.  The Nevada airport donated space and helped pull it off.  United Airlines made Dylan’s flight a VIP status in order to make sure that he wasn’t late for his own wedding.  As soon as he got off the plane and came down the escalators, they had the ceremony!!  Dylan and Madison didn’t spend any time relaxing after he arrived.  But, they were quickly made “husband and wife” — and they certainly have a fun and unique wedding story to share with friends (and their kids) in the future.  May they have a WONDERFUL future together.

A Little Good News: Special Veteran’s Day Edition

Happy Veteran’s Day!!  We already had a “regular” ALGN post this morning, but we, at A Little Good News, want to take the time to recognize the REAL heroes of our great country.  This country would be NOTHING without all of our amazing veterans, who, through all of the years, have put their own lives at risk so that they could protect our lives and our rights.  We recognize heroes all the time on our site.  But, our favorite heroes are our country’s heroes.  THANK YOU, VETERANS!!!  This country can never repay all you have done for us!!  You are the BEST!!!

Today’s Special Veteran’s Day Post is the first “repeat” post we have ever had.  We did this post back in July, but we loved it so much that we wanted to use it for our Veteran’s Day post, as well!  It is a musical compilation of a number of Surprise Homecomings of our heroes in the armed forces as they come home to their families.  To all of our subscribers, please share this post………and hug a Veteran today!!  They deserve all the praise and gratitude and recognition that we can possibly give them.

Now…Go have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

Surprise Wet Homecoming of Soldier / Father

Call me an “old softie” if you want to, but I really enjoy the surprise homecoming videos of our men and women in the service.  Today’s ALGN video is another one of those.  It happened a couple of months ago, so I apologize if some of you have seen it, but this soldier (who had been in Afghanistan for over 6 months) wasn’t supposed to come home for another 3 weeks — at least that was what his wife thought.  Can you imagine her surprise when he suddenly pops up from under the water??  This is a great homecoming for him, his wife and all of their kids (who are so excited to see their Dad again).  We owe a lot to these great men and women who sacrifice so much on our behalf.  I guess that is part of the reason that I get such a kick out of seeing their homecoming / reunion videos.  I hope you like them, as well.  I hope you all have a HAPPY FRIDAY and a GREAT WEEKEND!!!  And remember, the best way to do that is by making it great for someone else!!

A Tribute to the Fallen Heroes of 9/11

Today’s post for “ALittleGoodNews.com” is a music video paying tribute to the fallen heroes of 9/11.  I hesitated just a little bit, because I know that some may feel that this is “sad news”.  But, I feel compelled to show it anyway.  Where would our country be without the fallen heroes we have had in so many battles of our past?  These are men and women who are courageous enough to risk their lives (and, in fact, many times, GIVE their lives) for the benefit of others.  It is true that we stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us and that is what makes us such a great nation. Our foundation continues to be strong because of these great fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms.  I am thankful for all of them, but today, I want to especially pay tribute to those who did so on 9/11.  As the great majority of people were running away from the towers, these fallen heroes were rushing TOWARDS them to give aid in any and every way that they could!!  I love this country and one big reason is because of the character of so many heroes who are all around us.  They may not even know who they are.  Yet, when the time to stand and be counted comes, they are there, without giving a second thought.  This is one of those days where we should all take a moment to show our gratitude for the fallen heroes in our lives…and in our history!!

Little Girl’s Wish Comes True at Disneyland

You’ll enjoy watching this little girl’s wish…and, especially seeing that wishes DO come true.  I know that I sure liked it.  This little girl’s wish is something that she didn’t dare think could really come true.  She is truly a “Daddy’s Girl” and she missed her Daddy terribly as he was away, serving his country in Afghanistan.  Her mother took her to Disneyland.  Snow White asked her what her greatest wish was.  She even had her cover her eyes as she made her wish.  That was when the “magic” happened and you get to see this little girl’s wish come true…at the Happiest Place on Earth!!  Enjoy!!  I’m sorry that we couldn’t get the other video we found to work for us.  It showed her talking to her mom a few weeks or months earlier, almost in tears about how much she missed her Daddy, hugging a doll with his face on it.  But, we still get to see the reunion with this clip.

Military Reunions with “Man’s Best Friends”

Most of us have a soft spot in our hearts for those who protect us by serving in the military.  We also have a soft spot in our hearts for our pets.  So, we at “ALittleGoodNews” decided to have today’s post be a combination of those two things.  Watch this montage of wonderful reunions for some dogs who finally got to see their owners, returning from their service in the armed forces after being away for months on end.  We hope you like it.  We sure did!!

Emotional Homecomings for Our Country’s Heroes

I know that many (most?) of you may have already seen this video.  It has been making the rounds quite a bit on the internet this past week.  But, frankly, I don’t care.  It is simply too good to not be our “A Little Good News” post that wraps up our 4th of July week.  I have watched this 5 times now and I can’t keep from getting emotional each time I watch it.  It is a little bit longer than our regular posts, but watch it, anyway.  It will be the best 6 minutes and 43 seconds you can spend this weekend!!  And, as you watch it, please say a little prayer of thanks for those who serve (and who HAVE served) in our armed forces and ask God to protect those serving now until they also get to come home to their families again.

Happy 4th of July Weekend!!

Now…Go have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!
