Dog protects lost 3 year old

Today we have a wonderful ending to a story that could have ended much worse if it hadn’t been for the family dog.  In Cooperstown, North Dakota a mother could not find her 3 year old who had been playing in the yard on their family farm.  As she frantically searched for her little one she also noticed that the family dog was gone.  She called 911 and the search began for little Carson.  As it got later the parents fears increased.  Then a fireman, over a mile away from the farm, spotted a dog standing over a boy.  It was Cooper the dog and he was laying on the boy (who was asleep) protecting him from the rain and the cold.  Carson was ok and was returned home to his anxious parents.  Another fact from the story is that Cooper the dog was an abandoned puppy that the family had taken in when left on the road to fend for himself.

This is a true story of paying back.  The family taking in the puppy and the dog caring for his little boy.  What a wonderful story.

Unbelievable Reunion after 7 years

Our story today is about a pet reunion.  Well not just a pet but a member of the family.  I am sure many of you think of your pets as a member of the family. Thanks to Tim M for bringing us this wonderful reunion story.

This family had a tragedy 7 years ago that separated the Hartmans from their beloved pet Buddy.  About 7 years ago there were some wildfires in the San Diego area.  The Hartmans lost their home and pretty much everything in the Ramona wildfire.  But they still had Buddy.  Then they went to stay with some friends in El Cajon after the fire.  While staying there Buddy jumped the fence and ran away.  They searched everywhere but no sign of Buddy.  Now Buddy had been implanted with a microchip, so they were sure he would be found.  They searched and searched in hopes of a reunion.   The family has since relocated to Oklahoma but still thought about Buddy often.  Recently on a return visit to the San Diego area they got a call the very day they arrived that Buddy had been found.  Now 7 years late,r with the help of the microchip, they were able to identify Buddy as their dog and got the reunion they had so long awaited.  San Diego County animal service was able to reunite the family once again.

The Hartmans will tell you that if you can, please get a microchip for your pet so you too can have a reunion if you get separated.  The San Diego County animal services offers this for only $10.  Check with a County animal service department near you.

Have a GREAT day… by making it a great day for someone else.

The Smartest Dog in the World?

Todáy’s ALGN post is going to the dogs!  Or, at least, it is going to be about one dog, in particular.  Since we did not do a “pet / animal” post of the week last week, i thought we should start this week out with one.  It is a video of a man showing us all of the commands that his dog responds to.  I was AMAZED as I watched this video and saw how incredibly well trained this dog was / is.  WOW!!  Watch for yourself.  It will bring a smile to your face.  Tomorrow, I hope to be back to some other “newsier” items, but for the pet / animal lovers, I was overdue in getting a post for them.  The name of this dog is Jumpy and his trainer (Omar) has him trained incredibly well!!  Heck, I’m not sure that a PERSON who understood perfect English would be this well trained as this dog was.  It truly is an AMAZING performance by a very smart dog!!

If any of you come across a GREAT “good news” item, please send me an email or send me a private message on Facebook.  Some of our best posts have come from ones that you have found and sent my way.

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

See What This Dog Does to Some Kittens

Today is Friday and we haven’t had a “Pet Post of the Week” yet.  So, that is what today is!  Thank you to Karen D. for sending this to us.  It is about a dog named Lily.  Lily was a dog that was abandoned by its owner (possibly when they found out she was pregnant).  She is a lab mixed with some other dog breed(s).  She was taken into the Humane Society Adoption Center.  After giving birth to her 6 puppies, they were all adopted, leaving the mother dog all alone.  But, then something interesting happened.  A number of baby kittens all showed up at the Adoption Center, without their mother.  The people at the Adoption Center knew that it would be . a real challenge to feed the kittens by hand.  So, they decided to try something else, instead. They put the kittens in with the dog (Lily) and carefully see what would happen Lily INSTANTLY took the kittens and fed them for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  We don’t typically think that something like this could ever happen.  Aren’t dogs and cats almost “Natural Enemies”?  So, did the “mothering” instinct override the “dog” instinct?  I guess we may never know, for sure, what happens in cases like this.  In fact, in the video, it gives some quick examples of other animals (besides dogs), where the “mothering” instinct took over to help in a time of need between different types of animals.  I guess when it comes down to it, a mother is a mother.  They seem to always have a very soft spot in their heart for babies. This is one area where people aren’t so different from dogs or other animals.  Aren’t mothers wonderful?!?!  They are the greatest of all of God’s creations!!  Thank you to a special dog named Lily.  But, more importantly, thank you to Moms everywhere.  Now, let’s all go hug our respective Moms…or, if you are too far away, give her a call and say THANK YOU and let her know we love and appreciate all she has done for us.

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!

One Final Search by Rescue Canine

Today’s ALGN is our Animal Post of the Week.  It is a real touching one about one final search that a wonderful dog named Machiko (nicknamed “Mishi”) was asked to do.  Mishi is a wonderful search dog. She is a member of the Massachusetts Canine Rescue Team.  She is only 5 years old, but recently, she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone cancer.  Her handlers (who consider her to be family) made the very difficult decision to put this beautiful black labrador to sleep.  However, they had a great idea to have her go out in style.   Before putting her to sleep, they conducted one last search mission with her inside Hopkinton State Park on Tuesday night.  The report on the YouTube reads as follows:  ”The search wasn’t real — a member of the team pretended to be in need of rescue — but Mishi, only able to run on three legs due to the cancer, participated with incredible gusto. Footage of the ceremonial search was about as emotional as it gets. Mishi’s handler Russ Doucette told WCVB, ”She’s my partner, she’s my friend, and she’s a family member.” While fighting back tears, Cheryl Oetting, another handler, told the TV station, “When you train a search dog, you spend thousands of hours together. It creates a bond that’s very strong.” Mishi was scheduled to be put to sleep on Wednesday morning, according to WCVB. Doucette told the station, “I hope that the story gets out about how hard these people work, and how much they sacrifice to get themselves and their dogs ready to help people that do get lost.” I know that today’s post is a bit tough, but what a wonderful dog.  She has saved people her whole life (after being trained) through search after search.  Unfortunately, her loving handlers were not able to save her from her cancer, so they saved her from the worsening pain and death that was going to come from it.  Goodbye Mishi.  I’m sure there was a GREAT welcome for you above, because, like the Movie says, “All Dogs Go To Heaven”.  I just think your Doghouse above must be a Mansion!!

Real Life “Bambi on Ice” Rescue

Who wants to see another animal rescue?  Usually when we see the “rescue” videos, it is of a dog or some other pet that someone left to die.  But, today’s ALGN post (our “Animal Post of the Week) is about a different kind of rescue.  Today, we are going to show you video of a real life “Bambi on Ice” rescue (thanks to Danielle C., who told us about this one)!!  A father and his son (I believe their names, if I got it right, are Doug and Chance Kennison).  Doug is the father.  He and his son live in Minnesota.  There is another video (not the one you will see — as I was not able to get it to work for our post — but it gave more / better information about the rescue, so I will use that as I explain it to you.  It appears that someone had told the father and son that they had seen some kind of animals that appeared to be stuck on the frozen over lake not too far from where they live in Minnesota. The Kennisons took their hovercraft over to check it out and found three deer, who had apparently walked out onto the frozen lake and kept falling down. The more they struggled to get up, the more they would fall down, taking them farther and farther out onto the frozen lake.  By the time the Kennisons got there, they were quite a ways from shore.  But, they were also exhausted and no longer even trying to get up.  The father and son felt like (based on the lack of energy of the deer) and the feedback they got from the people who told them about spotting them, that these animals could have been there for two or three days (this video says two days) before the father and son rescue team arrived.  They tied rope around their legs and used their hovercraft to pull them back to shore.  I don’t like the way that this video ends the rescue.  It leaves you wondering if the deer ever actually got up and lived.  But, in the other video I watched, the Kennisons say that the deer did eventually get up and walk off to freedom.  This rescue by these two men literally saved the lives of these three animals.  Again, I don’t think the video gives their work its proper due.  But, I am very impressed that they would do what they did to save them.  I hope you enjoy this quick video of saving lives.

Jane Goodall’s Moment with Freed Chimpanzee

Today is our Animal post of the week.  And, this time, it is NOT a dog video.  Today, our video is about a chimpanzee getting released into the wild.  You animal lovers will really enjoy this one (if you haven’t already seen it).   Thank you to Denise S. and Pierre C. for sending this in to us.  This video follows Jane Goodall (Recognized universally as the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees) as she and others take a chimpanzee named Wounda (meaning “about to die”) and release her in onto Tchindzoulou Island .  Wounda is the 15th chimpanzee that they have released to this island, which Dr. Goodall refers to as a chimpanzee’s paradise.  The caring physician that oversaw bringing Wounda back to health is Dr. Rebeca Atencia.  Dr. Atencia points out that when they first got the chimpanzee, she was very close to death.  She had severe malnutrition.  But, they worked with her and she was now ready to go to “chimpanzee paradise”.  But, the best part of the whole video is what happens AFTER they lift the cage to free the chimpanzee.  Watch what Wounda does before she leaves for her freedom.  It is a touching moment.  Yep, no matter who or what it is (an adult, a baby, a dog, a chimpanzee….or anything else), we all appreciate being treated well.  That should help us to always want to help more.  But, the other point to think about is this:  Do we always take the time to show our appreciation to the one who helped us (and to God)?  Today’s lesson on gratitude is brought to us by a chimpanzee named Wounda!!

Sick Girl Gets a Puppy Surprise

Almost everyone loves a cute little puppy.  Puppy videos are among the most popular ones on the internet.  However, today’s ALGN video post is more than just a cute puppy video. This one pulled at my heartstrings a little bit.  Even though it is a few years old, I just saw it for the first time today and it got me a little choked up.  So, I decided to share it as today’s post.  Besides, it has been a while since I have had a pet / animal video and if I don’t have one soon, my friend, Dean Wendel, is going to get frustrated with me!!  Before you watch this “puppy video” (and it is very short — just 1 1/2 minutes long), I think it will help for you to hear a little bit of the backstory (that is NOT in the video…I found it in the “about” section on YouTube under the video).  This is what the father said about this little puppy surprise:  “My daughter has struggled with allergies and eczema all of her life but has always wanted a puppy. My wife and I found a hypoallergenic breed (Coton de Tulear) that we thought would be perfect for her as a surprise”.  So, with that as an introduction, now you are ready to watch the video.  This poor little girl has had challenges most of her life and has always wanted a puppy, but it was never a possibility because of her allergies and her eczema.  Look what happens when her dad surprises her and brings her home a puppy for her very own that will not be a challenge to her, physically!!  Enjoy the brief video.  I know that I sure did!!

10 Year Old’s “Feeling” Saves 80 Year Old Woman’s Life

Today’s post for A Little Good News is another great story.  This one is about a 10 year old, who acted on a feeling that he had.  I love “hero” stories.  But, as I have said before, I love child hero”" stories even more.  I have a feeling that you are going to like today’s story, too.  We want to thank Pierre C. for letting us know about this great story.  10 year old Danny DiPietro was coming home late from attending a hockey game with his dad.  When they were almost home, Danny saw a garage door up and what looked like a dog (as they were going by pretty fast).  Danny had a feeling that something was wrong and he wanted to go back to check it out.  But, his dad didn’t think there was anything to worry about.  Even after arriving home, Danny couldn’t shake the feeling that he had about needing to go back and check on the dog.  He told his Mom about it and she also told him not to worry.  She was certain that the dog would be fine.  But, Danny couldn’t let it go.  The feeling wouldn’t leave him and he returned to his mother one more time, asking her if she would PLEASE go check.  He told her that he had a strong feeling that something was not right.  So, Danny’s mom finally put their own dog on a leash and went back to check on that garage door.  To her surprise, she DID find that something was happening on that garage, but it wasn’t a dog at all.  It was a woman waving her arms in the air. Danny’s mom was scared.  She ran back and told Danny’s father.  He ran up to the garage with a blanket and Danny’s mom called 911.  Later, the doctors said that the 80 year old woman had maybe an hour more before she may have died had Danny not gotten his mom to act on his feeling when he did!!  The woman (and her daughter) were so thankful that a young boy was so observant that late at night……and that he would have such strong feelings about something being wrong….and continuing to push until someone acted on those feelings of his.  Danny DiPietro is a TRUE HERO!!!  I’m sure that the feeling that he was getting was a prompting from God….and it was great that he was sensitive enough to it that it stayed with him!!  Way to go, Danny!!!

The Loyalty of a Pet Dog

Who or what is as loyal as a dog?  Today’s ALGN post (our “Pet Post of the Week”) is a touching one about a dog named Tommy and we want to thank Cara P. who found this wonderful piece and sent it to us.  Tommy is a 7 year old German Shepherd living in a town in Italy.  Years ago, he was adopted by an Italian woman as a stray.  They were always together.  Tommy accompanied her as she went shopping and to mass, etc.  He was as loyal as any dog could be.  This woman loved her Tommy…and Tommy loved her right back.  His loyalty to her was rewarded with her constant companionship.  But, was that a reward for him?  Or was it what she needed, too?  Then, a few months back, his owner passed away.  At her funeral, Tommy showed up (although nobody brought him there).  Since then, each day, when the Church bells ring, loyal Tommy comes to Mass.  He sits there quietly for the services.  The parishioners are not bothered by him at all.  In fact, they have all kind of “adopted” him and feed him, etc.  He has become the mascot of the church.  But, still…you can see the sadness in his eyes about how much he misses his owner.  His loyalty will not waver.  At the end of this clip, the news reporter talks about how Tommy’s story reminds us of a lot of other incredible stories of loyalty by other dogs for their owners and / or other animal friends.  It even shows some pictures.  God created a lot of wonderful animals for this earth, but it seems that He did something especially wonderful when he created dogs and filled them full of such love and loyalty.  If only more people could learn to live their lives in such a manner!!  Let’s also be loyal and full of love towards others.

Have a GREAT day…by making it a great day for someone else!!!
