Friend helping friend – only 7 years old

Colin Cox and Ryan Branson are old friends.  Well, they have really only known each other for two years.   Colin spent some time as little boy with a dibilitating disease.  His mom thinks it made him more compassionate.  Colin came home from school and told his mom that his friend’s house burned down. He asked his mom to make a video to help Ryan’s family.  He had lost everything and he needed help.  So Colin made a video asking for help.  Thanks to his help they have already raised over $9000 to help Ryan’s family.  How beautiful to hear these little 7 year olds talk about what Colin did, “Because that is what friends do, they help each other.”  These two are like little “old souls”.  As they say to each other at the end of the video, “Your the best friend ever. What would I do without you”.  How awesome that these two boys can show us all the true meaning of friendship and how to help each other in hard times.  Colin, you are amazing and what a great friend you truly are. You are true example to all of us.

From Speech to Speechless

This is the moving story of Abby Snider’s surprise birthday party. The Virginia 16 year old has leukemia. Her family couldn’t afford a fancy birthday party for Abby. You see, she had missed her 15th birthday due to being diagnosed with luekemia.  So a plan was hatched by Tom Mitchell of The Stillbrave Childhood Cancer Foundation, Abby’s family, friends and the Winchester, Virginia business community to make sure Abby had a very memorable sweet 16. They back story told to Abby was that she was to give a speech at fancy fundraising gala to benefit tom Mitchell’s The Stillbrave Childhood Cancer Foundation.  She started off by getting a full makeover from head to toe.  She wrote a beautiful speech which she never was able to give.  This night is all about her.  She gets into the Limo after leaving the salon to head over to the hotel.  It tooka few seconds for her to realize the gala was for her.   Students raised $400,000 to help those dealing with blood cancer.  What a wonderful day for Abby.  A day she will never forget.

UPS man delivers help too

UPS driver Rick Nacker was working his normal route when he had a delivery at a home he had never been to before.   This story happened in the beginning of February.  When he was walking up to a house to deliver his packages he heard a cry for help.  A man had fallen while shoveling his driveway and had broke his hip.  He was able to drag himself inside of his garage but was not able to go any further. That was until Rick walked up.  Rick called 911 to get him help and made him comfortable until help arrived.  They say that had he not come along they are not sure the man would have made it.  He doesn’t feel like a hero but the man is very greateful.  He said he just did the right thing one human to another.  Sometimes you have to be alert to what is happening around you.  Sometimes we are placed there for reason.  Rick believes that he was sent there to this location at this time for this reason.  We think so too.  Great job Rick.  You are our hero.

She gave her kidney for a stranger

Zully Broussard an altruistic donor wanted to donate to her friend but was not a match so she donated a kidney to a stranger which set off a chain reaction at a San Francisco hospital.  California Pacific Medical Center was the site where 6 people donated kidneys to 6 strangers.  When the Zully donated to a stranger, that persons sister (who could not be a match her brother) agreed to donate for another stranger.  That persons relative donated for another stranger (since they were not a match for their family member).  It continued like this.  How amazing that people would share a piece of themselves for a stranger in honor of a loved one that they could not help because they were not a match.  It took a special computer program to figure out all these matches.  Once the surgeries are complete they will be able to meet their donors.  What a gift to be able to help others with the gift of life.   I am impressed at these people stepping up to help another person.  You people are my heroes.  Thanks to Brandy G. for telling us about this story.

Unusual Runner Joins the Race

On May 15, 2011, the Maryland Half Marathon had an unusual and unexpected competitor – a four-legged canine named Dozer. E:60 takes you to the course and reveals how Dozer reached the finish line and bested thousands of runners.  Dozer, a Goldendoodle watched as the race passed by his house.  He usually has an electric fence that keeps him in his yard but on this day the fence is not working due to a power outage.  So when the group of 2000 runners started coming by Dozer joined in.  He ended up not only running the remainder 8 miles but then back home.  The race was to raise money for the local cancer center.  They set up a fund raising page for Dozer and within hours he raised almost $45,000. Dozer raised more money than any other competitor in the race. It was great to see how people react to this dog joining the race.  How wonderful for Dozer to be able to help raise money for the Cancer center.   Thanks to Tammy H for sharing this story.  Are you up for a marathon?  Not all of us are but when you see friends who are and they need a sponsor to help a cause like the cancer center.. step up. Join the group and make a difference like Dozer did.

Did You Read To A Child Yesterday?

Yesterday,  March 2 all over the states people were reading.  Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!!  Every year at the beginning of March many schools and libraries take this time to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss by encouraging reading. In this community alone over 75 different  community leaders spent time reading to children.  As you see in this report 45 millions readers will pick up a book to celebrate during Read Across America.  Check out what your community is doing to celebrate this author during Read Across America and what he has done for literacy.  Who has not read Cat in The Hat or Green Eggs and Ham.  So many great stories that children love and parent love to read to their kids.  Help celebrate by picking up a book and sharing it with a child.  What a simple gift you have to give.  It doesn’t take much time but the time you spend is so important in the life of a child.    I think my favorite Dr. Seuss book is Cat in the Hat. What is your favorite Dr. Seuss book?

Happy Birthday to Him

Here is a wonderful little video showing how a little kindness can mean so much.  A group of men in Chicago were walking the streets delivering backpacks with sports drinks, socks, toiletries and other supplies to homeless people. A bunch of grown men, while doing this for these who needed it couldn’t stop the tears from flowing when they met Albert. It happened to be his birthday, and they were there just in time to answer his prayers. This was a beautiful experience for all of them.  It being Albert’s birthday he was surprised and was so thankful for everything they gave him and he could not be happier (even though what he was getting was not much).

Special thanks to CopyPress for throwing the Unconference in Chicago, where attendance was free as long as attendees donated a backpack for charity event the next day. This generous gesture, along with the generosity of all who attended, created some magical moments, and helped dozens of homeless people in downtown Chicago!  This is a great idea that would be so easy for other groups to do.  Get together a group of people and if everyone just brings one bag the cost is not much for each participant but what you will get in return.  Giving to others you get back so much more than you give.

Woman donates kidney and gets much more

Danny Robinson was in desperate need for a kidney.  He had been on dialysis for two years 3 days a week for 4 hours a day .  He wanted a normal life.  Danny and his mom went on a radio show talking about needing a kidney.  His mom said she was not well to donate her kidney.  Ashley McIntyre was a stranger who heard the report and knew that she was the same blood type.  She thought that she was healthy and could give him a kidney if they were a match.  So before she would let him  know she made sure she was a match.  They met after she found out that she was a match.  They spent time together before the surgery and kept in touch after. She just wanted to make sure he was ok.  As time went by they grew closer and closer.  At Christmas Danny gave her a ring and asked her to marry him.  She said yes and now Danny got so much more than a gift from a stranger.  He got a new life with the woman of his dreams.  They are planning their wedding and also the birth of their child in June.  Congratualations to Danny And Ashley. We wish you happiness and health.

Simple Acts of Kindness

Can’t we all just use a little small act of kindness?  Something as simple as a smile or a “good day” up to  money in the parking meter of someone you don’t know. I love this video.  These guys just stopped by a fire department to drop off some soda and a pizza. What could you do?  What would mean something to you?  How can you show that you care?  Try it today.  Spend some time thinking of all the ways you could “treat” someone to a little joy.  Enlist the help from others to make your efforts go that much further.  What would happen in this crazy world if everyone just once did something nice for someone else.  Sometimes we quickly jump to the opposite situation when someone does something that makes us mad or upset.  What if we could as quickly jump in and do something nice for the guy behind us in line?  Bringing joy to others gives you a great feeling. So do like these guys and go try it one day.  Let us know how it went.  Share the joy.  Share the love of life.

What do we miss?

This is a video made to remind us how much technology can remove us from each other instead of bringing us together.  What do we miss?  This video will make you stop and take a look at yourself and decide…am I too lost in technology?  As he says, “the touch pads take us out of touch” and “there are too many “I”s (Iphone, Ipad) not enough US.  Can we have conversation without abbreviation?  It makes you stop and think.  The thing we thought was bringing us together with social media is making us anti social.  I have noticed more and more families out to dinner at restaurants and not a one is talking to each other.  They just stare at the little screen in their hands.  It is even worse when only one is doing it and never notices how they are leaving the other sitting there staring around the room, not craving food as much as conversation.  It is just sad.  So make me a promise.  Put it down during dinner.  Never bring it to the bedroom.  Spend time talking about your day rather than posting about it.  Don’t misunderstand, I appreciate social media for what it was intended.  I love the fact that I can be a part of the lives of our family who lives far away.  Just don’t do it at the expense of those who are there with you.
