Helping others in Detroit

Continuing our theme this week of Random Acts of kindness we found a video from Detroit.  Two Detroit police officers, Amy Szarafinski and Luis Caban, go above and beyond the call of duty.  These two officers can be found helping people all over Detroit.  The story begins with an older lady who had been robbed. She was so frightened by the act that she was having trouble sleeping.  The officers came by and helped her board up her window that had broken during the robbery.  Another time they had to stop a lady for bulb that was out in her tail light.  She was so upset and said she just didn’t have enough money to buy even a bulb.  Officer Amy offered to take her to the store and Officer Luis said he would replace the bulb for her.  This and many other kindness they do every day.  These are types of officers we don’t hear about.  All we hear in the news is about the ones that do bad things.  Not often enough do we hear about the ones that do good deeds for the people they serve.  Officer Amy and Officer Luis you are our heroes today!!  Great job.

Random Act of Kindness at Walmart

Here is an interesting retelling of a random act of kindness witnessed at a Sioux Falls Walmart recently.  This report illustrates the event and then shows the actual video that was taken by someone who observed what happened.  I love hearing stories where people see a need and fill it without expecting anything in return.  People taking care of people.  That is what it is all about.  This story was a mother who needed diapers and the store would not honor a coupon she had.  When she decided to leave another customer saw what was happening and offered to pay for her diapers.  So moved by the act she went out to the parking lot and cried.  The woman who bought her the diapers asked her to someday return the favor by helping someone else in need.  How wonderful it is when someone fulfills a need for others.   Today’s random act of kindness hero is Carol Flynn.  Thank you Carol for seeing the need and acting.  What if everyone did something (even a small something) for others.  What a better place this world would be.

Crafting their way through cancer treatments

A Kansas City family has created a crafting  kit that helps young cancer patients fill time during treatments.  Becky Long was diagnosed 4 years ago with cancer and today she is cancer free.  During her treatments she found that it was helpful to have things to take her mind off her treatments.  She is working with her family to create activity baskets for kids with cancer.  Craft-a-Grams are given to kids to give them something to do to make the time go by faster.  The family gives away 400 kits a year.  It is their way of thanking all the people who helped them in their time of need.  The family shared what they were doing with Family Fun Magazine and won a $5000 grand prize.  They will use this money to fund more kits for Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.  What a great way to help others.  Challenge yourself to think of ways to help others.  It can be something as simple as a smile as you pass by an elderly person on the street to something as involved as this project.  Every little bit helps.

3 German Students Help Homeless Man

This is just a sweet story to brighten your day.  Thanks to Patricia M for sharing this video.  This video shows that we don’t need to do alot but sometimes the smallest act can help.  Three German students stop by a homeless guy to sing a short song and collect a few coins to give to the homeless man and to give joy to all around.  What a lovely selfless act.  Spending a few minutes talking with the guy and then just use a simple bucket and a guitar to create a lovely song that encourages folks passing by to donate some money in a hat.  They they return the bucket and give the man the had and the money.

Sometimes people need just a moment of joy.  I am sure this song and act gave him just that.. a moment of joy.  Share this with others to pass on that moment of joy.  Together we can change things.

Have you seen a video that touches your life?  Would you like to share this with others? Send it to us and we will help you share it.  Contact us on at alittlegoodnewsmail@gmail.com or on our facebook page.

Culver’s Owner Takes Care of his Employees

Here is a story of a business who really cares.  The Culver’s Restaurant in Plattville, WI was struck down by fire on Nov. 16, 2013.  At that time the employees thought that they had just lost their jobs.  Bruce Kroll, the owner of this Culvers for over 19 years knows how important all his employees are to the company.  When the restaurant burns down he decided to continue to pay his employees while they rebuild.  He agreed to pay his employees for six months.  He only asked one thing while he did this.  That was for the employees to donate their time to the community while the place was being rebuilt. His insurance paid the employee payroll for 60 days. Kroll paid the remaining four months of paychecks, almost $144,000 out of his own pocket. Some employees even held a fundraiser for the local fire department raising $2000 and gave 100% to the fire department.  Bruce cares for his employees.  After the 6 months to the day they reopened and were all back together again to serve the community.  They did have another scare. Only 24 hours later a tornado came only 20 yards from the restaurant.  They had to close again for 24 hours to clean up but am back open again and hopefully this time for good.  We salute you Bruce for being the type of boss that everyone needs.

Those Who Have Less Give More

Here is a video that really tells a story.  These guys were testing the theory of those who have less give more.  At the same time they were helping out some people who need help.  Watch as they first ask for help from those who appear to have all they need. They ask for food from people who have food at a restaurant.  Then they offer food to those who do not have any food.  After offering the food they send someone else in to ask those with none (who were just given food from them) to share with someone in need.  The results are not what I would have expected.  I would assume if you have nothing and then you are given something you would want to keep what you received.  That is not what they do.  Those that have less DO give more.  They share the little they have with the one in need. How inspiring.  It also makes me stop and thing of how much I have and how I should share it more.  How does this story speak to you?  Start by sharing this video with those you know and then when the opportunity presents itself share with those in need.  You will be glad you did.

Sportsmanship – What would you do?

Here is a short video (with no sound).  It is a complation of photos of the event.  This was a track race.   The Kenyan athlete (Abel Mutai) was about to win the race when he mistakenly pulled up thinking he had crossed the finish line.  He checks his watch to see his time.  The 2nd place runner (Ivan Fernandez Anaya from Spain) comes up to him and notices that he has not yet crossed the finish line AND can tell that Abel has made an error on the location of the finish line. Instead of passing him to finish the race as the winner, he points to the finish line and pats him on the back as he directs him towards the finish line.  After finishing the race Abel turns and presents his hand to thank Ivan for his sportsmanship.  What a wonderful gesture.  He could have just as easily passed him and left him second place and taken the win.  In an interview following the race when asked why he let him win, he stated, “And this is very important, because today, as it stands in all environments, in football, in the society, in politics, where it seems that anything goes, a gesture of honesty goes very well. ”  I applaud this athlete.  He is truly a man that knows what sportsmanship is all about. He is a man with a bright future indeed.

Thanks to Sharon A for suggesting this great story.

Texas Police Officers Buy Groceries

How many times does a good deed go unnoticed?  We don’t do good deeds to get noticed.  That is the case of these two police officers.  This story was brought to us by Patricia M.  Thank you again for a wonderful story of Officer Bryan Knief and Cadet Officer Anthony Vacarro.  Rebecca was shopping one day in Victoria, Texas when she noticed two officers with a full cart of groceries.  She thought that was unusual so she asked them what they were doing.  They told her that they had come across a family that needed groceries.  They saw the need and felt they needed to do something out of the kindness of their hearts.  They, of course, did not want the recognition.  Rebecca felt that too often police are seen in a not so good light and she thought people should know that they had some great police officers in Victoria.  This simple gesture problably meant so much to these people they helped.  What can we do to help others in our community.  Look around for a small act.  Sometimes that small act means something great for someone who needs your help.

Homeless Man Gets A Home – Update

Today I have a update to a story we brought you on March 6 (you can go back and see the first story by visiting alittlegoodnews.com and go to the archives).  Thank you to Kimberly C for finding this update and letting us know so we can share it with everyone.  Eric (the homeless man) was given $1000 winning lottery ticket from Magic of Rahat(a guy who usually pulls pranks to get reactions from his victims).  To his surprise Eric offered to share his winnings with Magic. This message went viral and people from everywhere wanted to help Eric so they set up a fundraising site.  In 17 days they raised $44,000 to help Eric.  Magic took the money and rented a house for Eric.  He also bought the things he would need for the house and set up a fund for Eric.

When he went to tell Eric (who was living at motel with his lottery winnings) he was surprised himself to find out that Eric got himself a job.  Magic then took Eric to his new house and the joy is indescribable.  How amazing it is when you help someone in need.  I think Magic got just as much joy out of watching Eric and seeing what his “prank” really accomplished.

Just watch this video (it is a little longer than most of our videos- but there is so much to tell).

Lost Wallet Returned to New Mother

Here is a story about a  new mother and how one good turn deserves another.  This is a story about doing something nice for others and paying it forward.  I love these stories where people receive kindness from others and that brings them to do something for someone else.  This time Nicole Parizo had lost her wallet just days after having a baby.  She figured she would never see it again.   One day she got a call from a man asked her if she had recently returned something to Target.  She said she had and that is when he told her that he had just received a birthday gift and found her wallet in the backpack he received.  She was so happy to get it back.  A couple days later when she was shopping again she looked in her wallet and found $150 with a note from the man.  He said she probably needed this money for her new baby.  He only asked the new mother that she “pay it forward” by doing something nice for someone else.   A week later Nicole came across a bone marrow drive for a man from Concord so she was tested to be a donor.    I just love it when people do things for others and never expect anything in return.  You too can be a donor.  Get tested and help someone in need.
