Homeless man gets reward

This story is from some time ago but it is worth revisiting.  This is a story of  Glen James, a homeless manwho lives in Boston.  Glen finds a bag with $40,000 and a passport.  When he finds the money (even though he has none himself) he turns it in to the police.  The city of Boston was overwhelmed with his honesty.   They even honored him with a plaque.  Over 500 miles away in Midlowthian, Virginia Ethan Whittington sees this story.  He was taken with this story and thought that Glen deserved more than just a plaqye.  Ethan started a campaign and people donated over $160,000 (this amount is updated to what he has raised currently).  How wonderful the community is to recognize the honesty of this man.  How many of us would do what he did and turn in this money.  No one saw it  but him. No one knew he had it but he never thought of anything but to get this money back to the owner,  How amazing.  Here’s to Glen and all the people who thought to honor him by donating to his reward.

Happy Birthday to Him

Here is a wonderful little video showing how a little kindness can mean so much.  A group of men in Chicago were walking the streets delivering backpacks with sports drinks, socks, toiletries and other supplies to homeless people. A bunch of grown men, while doing this for these who needed it couldn’t stop the tears from flowing when they met Albert. It happened to be his birthday, and they were there just in time to answer his prayers. This was a beautiful experience for all of them.  It being Albert’s birthday he was surprised and was so thankful for everything they gave him and he could not be happier (even though what he was getting was not much).

Special thanks to CopyPress for throwing the Unconference in Chicago, where attendance was free as long as attendees donated a backpack for charity event the next day. This generous gesture, along with the generosity of all who attended, created some magical moments, and helped dozens of homeless people in downtown Chicago!  This is a great idea that would be so easy for other groups to do.  Get together a group of people and if everyone just brings one bag the cost is not much for each participant but what you will get in return.  Giving to others you get back so much more than you give.

What Does the Homeless Man Do With the Money

This is a guy who likes to do You Tube videos.  Today his video was an experiment on what would happen if you gave $00 to a homeless man on the street asking for money. He follows the guy and records what he would do with the money.  He  assumes the worst but is quite surprised to see what happens.  He sees the guy go into a liquor store/market.  He comes out with a large bag.  He then walks to a nearby park and digs into his bag and pulls out food for the people in the park.  After watching for a while Josh (the blogger) goes up to Thomas (the homeless man) and tells him what he was doing.  He then apologizes to Thomas for assuming that he would do something bad with the money. Being so moved he gives Thomas another $100 as Thomas tells him his story of how he became homeless.  He says most of the time it is a case of bad luck and bad timing that makes people homeless.  Thanks to Patricia M for sharing this story with us.  If you would like to help Thomas out of his situation you can donate to  https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-thomas-to-get-a-fresh-start and help him get a fresh start.  So far they have raised over $122,000. It will only continue until January 21.

Random Acts of Pasta

Here is a guy who sees an opportunity and turns it into a wonderful idea.  He heard about Olive Garden offering a neverending pasta for $100 for 7 weeks of pasta meals.  Yes, meals that included pasta bowl, soup or salad, breadsticks and soda. Now this could be a bit much for one person but he then got an idea.  What if he went and picked up the pasta and then delivered it to people he knew.  That is where it started.  He first enjoyed the meal himself and then thought why should I be the only who enjoy this.  He went to different restaurants and picked up meals and dropped them off at his friends and families homes.  He was on a mission to make random acts of pasta to people he knew or even to people he knew of… like the UPS man and the mailman.  They always appreicated it. Then he thought.. why not the homeless.  So he visited several Olive Gardens and collected a few meals and headed out to find the homeless.  This is where our video begins.  You can see by watching it that they are quite surprised and appreciate the warm meal.  What a great idea to turn something into a chance to help others.  Great job.  See if there is an opportunity out there that you can do for others.

Sharing with Others

Here is a video experiment.  This group sent a guy out and asked people for food.  It was an experiment to find out if people would give up their food to others in need.  First he gets no help.  He moves to the next person and again asks for help telling the person that he is hungry… in need.  Once again, he gets turned away.  The experiment moves on to another direction.  They walk up to a homeless man and offer him their leftovers.  He is so greatful and excited that they gave him their leftovers.  The next step was another man who came by and told him that he was hungry.  The homelesss man without hesitation agrees to sharing his food with the stranger.  He thanks him and after eating his pizza, he gets up and gives him some money to thank him for his generosity.  He is so touched that he can’t hold back the tears.   My favorite part of the video is the saying at the end.   ” The things we give to people can make a life .  Never look down on anybody unless you are helping them up. ”  At this time of year it is good for us to take some time and think of others.  Make sure if you can reach out to theres this holiday season.

Feeding the Homeless in Atlanta

Here is a video from Give Back Films of a bunch of young people who decided to go downtown Atlanta and feed the homeless.  They brought their BBQ with hamburgers, hotdogs, chips and drinks and set up a stand in Centennial Olympic Park.  I love to see the joy they get in seeking out people who could use a meal.  They take the time to meet them, shake their hands and feeding them the meal.  Twice they were chased out of the park by Police due to some regulations of no BBQ and no open flames in the park.  But that did not stop them.  They still found a way to continue.  They just picked up their stuff and moved a little further away from the enterance of the park. This was recently in July.  We need to remember these folks now that the weather is starting to change and it is getting colder on the streets.  What can you do to help?  What can we all do if we just work together?  There are many organizations out there that help feeding the homeless.  If you don’t feel you can make a difference alone why not try to volunteer at one of these organizations. Together we can make a difference.  Thanks to these young people who made a difference to the people in Atlanta.

One stitch closer- The Empowerment Plan

Here is an amazing story of a woman named Veronika Scott.  She is 24 years old and is the CEO and founder of The Empowerment Plan in Detroit.  She grew up as a child of addicts.  Growing up unsure of her future sh received a scholarship to go to college.  While she was in a class the teacher presented the class with an assignment to design something that will fill actual needs. She did her research at homeless shelters.  After many prototypes she created a coat that was a coat during the day but would open up and had a pocket at the bottom that you could slip your feet in and velcro shut like a sleeping bag.  This seemed like a solution until one day when a lady came out of the shelter (as she was there getting feedback on the coat) and came out yelling at the “We don’t need coats.  Coats are pointless.  We need jobs”.  she was right.  The coat was just a bandaid.  She began hiring only people from the homeless shelter and training them to be independent.  What an amazing idea.  She is empowering them to do anything they want.  Way to go Veronika.  You are our hero.  Thanks to Patricia M for suggesting this story.

Helping Homeless through Music

What can we do to help the homeless?  Sometimes it seems this is too big for me to help.  What can just a few people do?  Well, here is a video that shows what a small group of people in New York City did to help one homeless man.  They asked the same thing.  What could I do?  Then they got together and decided that that there was something that they could do.  They went out and found a guy that had a sign and needed some help.  They sat down and just started singing.  What a perfect song too.  I love the reaction of the homeless man.  He was a part of a group for a while (which I think brought him much joy).  He also was so touched to see what happened when they started to sing.  People walking by were willing to help when the music started.  Thanks to this group who call themselves the Model Pranksters.  They helped show the people of New York and everyone watching this video that you can help.

Magic Helping the Homeless

Here is a great story that is trending right now.  Rob Anderson is a magician.  He decided one day to use his magic to help someone. He was walking down the street in Las Vegas and he sees this homeless veteran, Alan McKracken, who is asking for money and offering smiles. His sign reads that he needs “Homeless, trying to get by – Anything helps. God Bless”.  He also has a sign that says smile.  Rob decides to check it out and see if this guy is for real. What he does then is probably part of his act but it really surprises the guy.  Rob really wanted to help the guy out so after doing his trick and giving him the money he even started a GoFundMe.com campaign to help this vet out.  To date it has raised  over $38,000 that was raised by over 1500 people in just 10 days.  Amazing what we all can do if we just stand together.  If you would like to donate to help this vet you can too by going to  http://www.gofundme.com/fd33hs

Thanks Rob for bringing attention once again to our homeless who just need a little help to get started again.  Even just a smile. It started with a little magic and ended with so much more.   You started by giving Alan that smile and a new start.  Great job Rob.  You are today’s hero.

Homeless Students Gives Valedictorian Speech

What an accomplishment!!  This is a story about Rashema Melson from Washington DC.  Rashema was selected by her school to be the valedictorian of her high school graduating class.  She is alot like most students in her class.  What makes her different is that Rashema is homeless and for the last 3 years lives in a homeless shelter with her family.  Not only was she selected as valedictorian but she also received a full ride scholarship to Georgetown University.  We all wish the best for her and hope that she graduates from Georgetown with a medical degree and fulfills her dream of becoming a forensic pathologist.  What an accomplishment she has made already and with the attitude and support she has received we are certain that she will accomplish these goals.  What an amazing young lady.  How did she do it?  With determination and support of her family and her school.  I am sure there were a lot of teachers that without their support she might have faultered.  Thank you to the teachers and her supporters.
